I've seen the way he trains in both the UFC All Access and his MMA instructional vid. It doesn't look like he lifts that heavy weights and he also says he doesn't focus too much on weight training.

So what's the deal? After watching him take down Hughes at will and literally make him look like an amateur, it can't all be because of his genetics can it? Or is there something, he's not telling us?

He has functional strength.

And you'd be surprised, alot of olympic wrestlers don't use generic weights.
and he trains with the canadian wrestling team.

most fighters don't train for maximal strength while they are training for a fight since conditioning and skill work take priority. they'll do it in their "off season". i doubt very much that he doesn't do ANY kind of heavy lifting.

keep in mind that heavy lifting doesn't have to be iron weights. get familiar with some of ross enamait's methods and you'll see. he deadlifted around 500 lbs at 170 bodyweight. without ever training for it. he does other posterior chain excercises. sandbag shouldering, heavy db snatches and cleans, etc.

i only used that example to show that it's possible to get super strong without lifting weights. heavy resistance is what's important.

^

also using his last hughes fight as an example is hard, b/c you can see how hughes pretty much gave up early in the fight when he realized he couldnt take georges down.

Thanks for the info, I really had no idea you could get that strong without lifting weights.

I have a similar physique to him, but not nearly as strong.

he does this workout www.retardstrength.com j/k

he's a natural athlete and working w/grapplers like the canadian wrestling team & bigger wrestlers like rashad def helps.

wrestlers & grapplers like karo develop crazy 'country' strength and endurance

yeah... the body on body contact with guys a lot bigger than him most likely helps him build incredible strength... I've been grappling with this guy that's 100lbs lighter than me (my best friend) and his strength has improved leaps and bounds over the last year, he lifts no weights and the only real exercise he gets is grappling with me...

WAR GSP

Bingo. Look at this stomach. It sticks out its so muscular, just like Chuck's muscle gut.

Plus GSP is genetically strong.

Well when you see him train, he's training as he does now, using weights and routines that help him keep his current muscle mass, not gain or lose any. But I'm sure back in the day he worked out to gain muscle like most others are doing. So the routine you see now is not the routine where he built all of the muscle, just keeps it and preps for fights.

A lot of it is that he is just a very very very good grappler. When you grapple that much, you develop this great strength. Some guys don't even look that strong but they just have this amazing strength that allows them to move bodies very well.
