View Full Version : Trying to drop about 30-35 Pounds. Suggestions?
Alrighty, so I'm trying to work myself up toward getting serious and trying to lose about 35 pounds. I'm at the highest weight I've ever been at, which is 235.
First thing's first is that I don't have the money to join a gym, or buy suppliments or anything like that. I've basically gotta do it through exercise and eating well. I've got a jar of multivitamins, but that's it.
I've also got a weight bench and a curling bar at my house. There isn't a ton of weight tho. Probably not more than about 120 pounds in total. It's old and isn't mind. I can use it if I'd like tho.
We've got a nice area near our house that is approx 1/4 mile, with a little uphill section to it, that would be decent for running, even tho the idea of running is pretty awful to me. Tho I know chances are I'm not going to meet my goal without it.
I've got a pretty jacked up sleep schedule right now, which effects me eating schedule too. I need to fix that, and start eating breakfast.
One thing I plan to cut out is soda. I hate drinking just water, but i'll probably go that route for a while.
So anyway, now that I've went into a little detail... What would you suggest for exercises for me to do? How about for the running? I really think I need to start out slow on that, or I'll quit that on the first day lol. Suggestions on working my way up on that would be pretty cool tho.
The worst part about exercising by yourself is having to be self motivated, so I'll probably take the suggestions in here, and post results and whatnot in this thread so I'm at least held accountable to more than just myself. Wish me luck and any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

hotnewton 01-11-2008, 03:19 PM Cutting out all forms of liquid other than water can drop up to 20lbs from your frame in a calendar year...
Look at it this way... you drink two sodas a day (or one soda, one juice box, whatever) let's just say that the total number of drinks you drink adds up to 300 calories... 300 empty calories x 365 days in a year = 109,500 empty calories... 109,500/3,500 (calories in a pound of fat) = 31.28lbs... so if you did nothing to change you diet (assuming you are not gaining weight right now but maintaining it) and you just stopped drinking anything but water and tea (no sugar or cream) you could potentially lose 31lbs over the next year with no effort...
It's not that simple but it goes to show how deadly those soda's and fruit juices can be to you... I say learn to love drinking water...
If you only go the water route to lose the weight and then start drinking the soda again once you reach your goal you will balloon back up in no time... it's not about following a diet to reach your goal weight, it's about completely changing your lifestyle and the way you eat so you never have to diet again...
I'll be back with more later.

I already mentioned I can't afford to buy any suppliments. As also mentioned
I know I've gotta do cardio too. It's just a matter of what is the right amount to start out with that won't leave me giving up quickly because it is too much, too soon, with no one to push me to keep doing it.

Good info in there. It's just unfortunate that a lot of it is basic run of the mill info without specifics. I bookmarked the site so I'll probably look back to it, but my main purpose of the thread was more in hopes people would suggest a good startup plan for the workout part.

you dont need a ton of weights, compound weighted or bodyweight exercises (bodyweight squats for example) in ross enamait's workouts are great.

Get whole milk it has CLA and get organic non hormone as well!
But tons of water and lots of airdyne or running!
blevunly 01-12-2008, 07:54 PM Tabatas are probably one of the best exercises for fat loss around, they also don't consume much time. Anaerobic conditioning is much better for fat loss than aerobic conditioning. So something like tabatas will be more benificial than jogging for thirty minutes.

Other than that lift weights like ven said and also watch your diet although I'm sure you already knew that. I only mention it because it is the most important part of trying to lose fat.

Rynoplasty 01-12-2008, 08:02 PM Eat lots of lean meats and veggies and cut out fast food type stuff. Don't eat white flour and if you are going to drink soda drink diet, even though diet is bad in different ways it is still better weight wise to go with diet but it is best not to mess with it at all. Also to me it seems like the best excercises to do if you are just trying to lose weight is simple stuff like doing 100 pushups, then doing 100 situps, then a bunch of pull-ups or just do curls if you don't have a pullup bar or something that will work as one. Throw that in with whatever other weightlifting excercises and just keep cycling them untill you can't workout anymore. Then after that just try and increase the amount of cycles or number of pushups/situps you do.

danxgerous 01-15-2008, 11:12 AM I stay away from all sodas and pretty much juice as well. I drink sugar-free Red Bull every so often though.
Let me ask you, do you play any sports? I started playing basketball again like 2 months ago and that has done wonders for me. I lost about 11 pounds in about a month just playing full-court pick-up games like twice a week.
You just need to find a court. Hell, you don't even need a ball. Someone will have one.
I'm also getting back into tennis. Great workout too.
Doing something competitive keeps me motivated. I hate running on the treadmill. I get a much better cardio workout playing a sport.

I lost 35 pounds in 1.5 months with doing nothing other then cutting all the shitty foods out of my diet, running in the morning on an empty stomach....only about 20 minutes worth, drinks lots of water, and try to lift weight and or just some generally straining exercises 2-3 times a week.
Remember, skinless chicken and vegetables are your best bet meal wise, i STILL eat those as dinner 4 times a week.

kronker 01-16-2008, 01:16 AM Do you have an mp3 player/portable cd player/tape player ? Start walking man. Easiest way to lose weight. Don't have to be hugely committed to effort and pain. Quite enjoyable. Once you lose 20 you'll be way more motivated to start hitting weights and running excetera.
If you have trouble eating in the morning, then just have a piece of fruit(preferably and orange or a lemon or a grapefruit or pineapple) because these get your digestive juices going and help stimulate your immune system and boost your metabolism). A shake is good as well if you like that.
Walking when you first get up is best. This spikes your metabolism for the rest of the day. After having a piece of fruit and then going for a walk, come back and have some form of protein and carbohydrate. I have a protein shake with an apple and a banana(all blended together).
Drink lots of water.
Don't get down on yourself if you cheat. Its a long term project. Try to stay away from Fast food at least(even if you eat shitty food at home at least you're taking the first step by cutting fast food).
Feel good about yourself everyday when you get up. You're changing your life for the better and you can do it.

Whoa, lots of answers. I haven't checked this thread out for a couple days.
Ok so where to start. The walking/running thing hasn't started yet. New England snowfall kinda cockblocked that, and I didn't really feel like trying to go Rocky, running in the snow and whatnot. (Yes, I've got an Ipod.)
I've got rid of the soda. Most meals I go with water or 1% Milk. Occasionally a glass of OJ.
As for food. I'll be honest. I don't watch my diet, but I don't eat like shit either. I eat what I want, but I'd much rather eat a chicken breast (or baked fish), a potato, and some veg than some pizza or tacos, or anything like that.
I've always been the guy who would eat whatever and not gain a pound. Well with getting older also means not being outside playing sports all day with your friends. So most physical activity has went down other than riding a bike about a mile daily, but you'd be surprised how little that does for anything but your legs lol (or at least I was.) I do look forward to nicer weather tho. I can at least attempt to get some friends to shoot some hoops or something. We'll see tho.
I did start with the weights two nights ago. Yeah, lots of friggin soreness with that.
Not gonna lie.... most of it is my mission to not move up a pant size. Right now I'm bordering on having to move up one due to most the the weight being centralized around the gut.
It's just the beginning tho. I appreciate all the info that's been left.
One question tho for people. So I did about 3 sets of curls the other night. I basically just pushed it to do as many curls per set as I could. So yesterday and today (I lifted at night) my range of motion in my arms has been fucked. I know it's not good to work the same muscules on back to back days, but would you say it's be ok to go ahead and lift (if I plan to lift every other day) if that range of motion isn't still fully back do to general tightness and soreness? I have no problem lifting through the soreness, I'm more questioning if it is ok to do it, without hurting myself.
TapOut136 01-17-2008, 06:12 AM Your body needs time to recover and grow. It's possible to make good progress over time lifting 3-4 times per week. What you'll need to look for is a "split", basically a schedule of training that allows you to train, recover, and then train again. Essentially, the idea is not to use to the same muscle everyday (sort of like what you described but you don't want to work biceps and then do a heavy pulling exercise the next day because your biceps will already be sore/tight from the previous day). You can do a full body day then take a day off; you can switch between lower body and upper body days, or find a body part split spread over several days.

Yeah after doing bicepts for the first time in a long time, I'd give it a week at least before you did them again. Ease into that shit. First 2 weeks are always the hardest on soreness and shit and if you go back when its not healed you're actually doing major damage to your body.
Make sure you have at least a 3 day break in between muscle groups. That seems to work for most people.
So like
Day 1: Bicepts/Chest
Day 2: Tricepts/legs
Day 3: Shoulders/abs
And then a day off when you do nothing or just light cardio. Then start over again.
Day 5:Bicepts/Chest
Day 6: Tricepts/Legs
Day 7: Shoulders abs.
Some people like doing bicept/back and tricept/chest with legs/abs. I don't find that works for me because when I do back, by the time I'm done that workout my bicepts are cooked so I can't do as much weight and focus as hard on them but if I do chest I've been working mostly tricepts so my bicepts are ready for their own workout.
Note: Do biggest lifts first. So Bicepts/Chest, Do chest workout first because its a bigger muscle then bicepts.
hotnewton 01-17-2008, 07:15 AM When I was younger and trying to lose weight my workout looked like this...
Mon-Sat:
10 minute jog/walk worked up to a 30 Minute Jog/Run
Mon-Sat:
5 minute heavy bag/shadowbox worked up to a 30 Minute Heavy Bag/Shadowbox (varying degree of intensity depending on energy level)
Mon/Wed/Fri:
Full Body Barbell Circuit Workout (light weight to start, increased weight or reps every workout)
Circuit was something like this:
Squat
Row
Bench
Deadlift
Overhead Press
Curl
Crunches
Dog Pointers (or whatever you want to call them when you are on all fours and you extend your left leg and your right arm then right leg and left arm)
I'd do 5 circuits with very little rest.
You are a beginner, I'd recommend doing 3 full body workouts a week for the next month increasing weight or reps every time... that's just my eOpinion though, it'd be easier if I were there, but that's a pretty generic circuit workout and I have used that one or modified ones to help at least a dozen people lose weight and get in better shape...
Also, I did a lot of sports during this time too, I played street hockey at least 3 times a week and I was working at Mickey Dees where we would have freezer fights every time we worked... yes... grappling matches in a freezer... small town excitement ftw
hotnewton 01-17-2008, 07:19 AM I'd also like to chime in with the Tabata method that has been mentioned in here... while I think it is one of the most effective workouts out there, I do not recommend it for you, at least not consistently... I've heard of even the most seasoned athletes burning out from overuse of the Tabata method...
Take it slow, work into it, and if you don't have time to do anything else, bang out an all effort Tabata set...

I like the sound of a good percentage of this. The starting out with 10 minutes of jogging feels managable. I'm gonna start tomorrow I think. Fuck the snow. I'll just bundle up. Heck, maybe I'll even aim my first jog toward the grocery store. I could use some salad stuff for lunches.
Still gotta get going on that whole breakfast thing too. I friggin hate eating when I get up. I've gotta start forcing that issue. I'm thinking about a jog, and then maybe a poached egg or two on wheat toast. Never had eggs poached before. Should be interesting.

be careful in the cold... no joke, I got minor frost bite on my penis once from jogging in the cold... long underwear ftw...
and yeah, you definitely need breakfast... weird thing for me is that lately I don't feel like eating when I get up... but then I end up waiting for like 3 hours to eat, this leads to unnatural cravings and overeating...

If you find you don't like eating the cereal, or if it fills you up too much or makes you bloated, then give the fruit I suggested a try. I only say this because when I use to hate eating breakfast I read this book about healthy digestion and I cut out all the milk from my diet(highly debateable issue so lets not get started) and I started eating just one piece of fruit that they suggested and my digestion got going crazy awesome.
My digestion was so good that I could eat a meal(they were small) and in 20 minutes I could exercise no problem.
Either way, its great that you're starting a program of sorts.

i know what you mean... I've really cut down the amount of milk in my diet.... I think it has been helping... I don't know if it is just in my mind, but I find that milk in cereal is what really makes me feel bloated... and not all cereals just some
When I just drink milk I'm ok, but when I mix it with a couple bowls of cereal I feel bloated and lethargic... then again, it could just be in my head

ninjashoes 01-20-2008, 02:46 AM The only way I ever seem to lose weight is from running. The only other thing that has done it for me is wrestling practice type cardio and a long day of construction type work. I dont think wrestling practice type cardio is practical for someone alone at home so I would go with an excercise bike, jogging, epiliptic trainer etc.
One thing I really love are these resistance bands I just bought. I can keep them close to my computer along with a jumprope and with them both combined I can keep my heartrate up throughout the day. I still dont really get in shape unless I get my ass out the door and jog though. Its easy to really overdue it though so be careful when jogging up hills especially. One small injury can set you back half a year, make you lose all of what you gained and destroy your motivation.
I know you said no supplements but substituting a meal with the right protein shake, some CLA(its cheap) and some greens(probably dont help you lose weight but they give you more energy and oxegenate your blood allowing you to do longer cardio) can go a long ways. You can go to bodybuilding.com and search for the best prices. I know supplements arent right for you right now but have you considered maybe switching to just white meat, fish or chicken I mean or maybe a totally vegan diet.
I was thinking about trying vegan one day not because I love animals but because vegans who get enough protein look to be in good shape.

The title of wanting to lose 30-35 is slightly deceiving in that it is not my only goal, obviously. Being in all around better shape is the idea. Dropping the 30-35 is more or less the cherry on top.

Yes, my advice was given with your goals in mind.

Actually they will make you bicep muscles stronger(hence calling them bicep curls) and they will boost your metabolism and put muscle on your biceps which burns more calories, adding to your ability to burn fat.

Yes, but not at anywhere near the level the big compound lifts will do (including those that involve the biceps).
Look, I've got nothing against bicep curls. I'm vain, I do them as well. But if you're trying to lose weight/get stronger, bicep curls are about the last exercise you want to be focusing on.

Very true.
The thing is, when a person starts working out again they are generally out of shape. Jumping into compound lifts right away can spell injury pretty quickly.
Bicept curls work really great in a circuit which is a great way to gain some muscle while doing cardio at the same time.
Cardio = Burns more calories = lose more fat.
So not that it is anything huge, but it looks like I'm down 4 pounds when I stepped on the scale this morning. I'm only gonna step on the scale once a week though. I feel like if I do it more than that than a lack of results on a daily basis could be discouraging.

I agree with this completely... Bicep Curls belong in a beginner circuit routine... as you progress though, fuck the isolation exercises to shit... compound ftw

good news bro... I am the opposite... I like to know every morning where I am sitting... but I hear where you are coming from... just don't let yourself get derailed if you stop seeing results for awhile... remember, a smmllaer waist line isn't the only reason you are working out... as long as you continue to improve cardio and get stronger, the results will be there eventually
Ninjabros got your back... if you feel yourself slipping into old shit habits let me know so I can eSmack you in the eFace
VENDO 01-27-2008, 11:45 AM Actually they will make you bicep muscles stronger(hence calling them bicep curls) and they will boost your metabolism and put muscle on your biceps which burns more calories, adding to your ability to burn fat.
You're wrong.

I've lost 5 pounds as well. I'm freaking happy as shit.
I'm eating healthy as fuck, plus I'm doing a high cardio routine. Even when I'm lifting I'm doing high reps with low recovery time to keep the blood pressure pumping.
It makes me look like a bitch with the weights I'm doing but I'm working out at the YMCA with the old ladies so I'm pretty much a piece of meat to those dirty cougar bitches.
I suggest YMCA to anyone who feels out of shape and wants to feel better about themselves. Once you get back into shape, then move onto a real gym.

dont worry about it, talking to a guy this week. his gear is 30lb dumbbells, perfect pushup & a jumprope. he lost weight, stagnated & gained weight.
he lost fat, turned the corner and started adding muscle hence his weight gain. body composition is completely different now & he's getting new clothes.

It's not 15 dollars a month. Theres two YMCA's. I go to the one on the Northshore which is smaller but the one downtown is nice. It'll be around 35 bucks a month though. Lots of vaginas there though. Be careful downtown. Don't let a meth head shank your ass.
