SD_ATOmega119 12-24-2007, 11:09 PM yeah well im sick of there never being any tournaments in NY and the fact that they rarely come around anyway...
but im gunna try to organize a grappling compitition and i want to know what kinda things i would need...
i have some experience with this bc i have organize and put on wreslting tournaments before...
i already spoke to USA wrestling and they are willing to help withthe steps necessary to do this
any input or volunteer help would be appreciated
TapOut136 12-25-2007, 11:42 PM I guess it depends what part of NY you're talking about. Many of the major Grapplers Quest events are in NJ several times a year.
jukeboxhero 12-26-2007, 10:58 PM Where abouts in NY?
pokey 12-26-2007, 11:05 PM my opinion would be to let as many people know as possible and petition, find out how to contact your local commision, and show that there is a need to run more competitions.
Obi Narb Kenobi 12-27-2007, 02:06 AM dude if you get hooked up wi USA wrestling you're set, just have some friends help you out with bracketts and get some mats and a gym,
USA wrestling taking over sub grappling is such a good thing, they won't rip people off like those gracie barra motherfuckers who charge $75 and up for a tournament fucking jewish brazilian assholes

Absolutely. I've been to a few tournaments where I paid 60+ dollars for entry. USA wrestling charges a low entrance fee. Definatley look into it.
Sloth 12-28-2007, 05:19 PM Hi,
That's awesome that you are looking to put on tournaments! When you get started, I will get to as many of them as possible and let everyone in my school know about them. There are lots of guys there looking to get more tournament experience.
Some suggestions:
1. If you put a sub. grappling tournament on, have the advanced divisions before intermediate and beginner. It will encourage a higher level of competitor and also the advanced guys help coach the intermediate and beginner guys alot of the time so you will get better matches out of the advanced guys if they are not all tired from shouting and coaching all day before they compete.
2. Send flyers and posters out to every school in the region that you can so they can post them up and let students know about it. In your area, there are obviously plenty of places to send stuff out to.
3. Get a well known competitor/grappler to do a free seminar before the tournament. Alot of tournaments are doing this now and it gives added incentive to pay a slightly higher tournament price and it also helps promote local instructors.
4. Try to get some well known competitors/instructors to compete. If good guys know that good guys will be there, then good guys will show up. Maybe offer free entrance to "x" amount of well known instructors students to compete if "well known instructor" competes and brings people.
5. Do alot of research on when other tournaments, big and small , are going on. It will cut into your numbers if there is another tournament going on on the same day somewhere nearby. If there is a tournament in NJ the same day that there is one in NY, people from NJ and PA are more likely to go to that one. If they are well spaced out, then you will get more people. Also, if there is a large tournament going on , it might be a good idea to have a smaller tournament a few weeks before and advertise it as a "warm up" tournament. Maybe you could make a deal with Grapplers Quest or NAGA and offer free entrance to a GQ or NAGA for the winners of certain divisions in your tournament.
I hope those suggestions help some. Best of luck and please keep updating when you are going to have the first one!

these are egreat suggestions that i will put to good use
but i have hit a lil roadbloack...usa wrestling is willing to sponser an event but unofuntately the nysac does not sanction submission grappling without and insurance provider blah blah which other states do not require...however usawreslting has and insurance company that covers wreslting events to an extent and wat not but they dont cover submission grappling yet. But with that said usa wrestling said its only a matter of time until there insurance policy will cover sub grapplig. so once the can provide so coverage for the tournament provide and the nysac then it can go on so within a couple of months time possibly even shorter time tourny's in ny specifcally the LI area willbe able to put on
Sloth 12-29-2007, 11:47 PM Sorry to hear about the red tape, that's a bummer. Hopefully things will work in your favor soon, with the popularity of Sub. Grappling and MMA, I'm sure things will be easier in the future.
We had the same problem in Philly when Grapplers Quest was going to have their tournament here last month. They couldn't do it because submissions, etc... aren't permitted here yet in tournaments, so they had to relocate to south jersey. Oddly enough, there have been plenty of BJJ and sub. Grappling tournaments here as well as Judo tournaments with subs. that went under the radar.... Oh well.

yeah i could run some undreground tourny;s but without the insurance b,s. i could be held liable for serious injuries that occur...so thats why even none of those are in the LI area kinda suxs balls
