In addition to money from the Gates Foundations, Norway has contributed about $8 million to the new fund, says Euroarctic.
The fund will finance preservation of different seeds from developing countries in the international seed bank on Svalbard through the UN-supported organization Global Crop Diversity Trust.
"This initiative will secure the most important species for food supply in developing countries," director Cary Fowler of the GCDT said.
Loss of biological diversity is one of the world’s biggest environmental challenges.
That is why this storage vault is going to contain seeds from the most important crops used for food supply in developing countries.
The storage is being built inside a dismantled mine on Svalbard and will include millions of different seeds from all over the world.
