Yes.

Kali=filipino weapons arts before they were colonized by spain.

escrima/eskrima/arnis=filipino weapons arts after they were colonized by spain and stopped using blades to train and started using sticks to represent blades.

All of those "stick" weapons are old farm implements.

You're thinking japan.

Sticks in the indonesian area actually represent bladed combat weapons. The only reason they didn't keep training in bladed weapons was the colonization of spain. They forbid it. So sticks were used.

This is what the sticks represent

i watched an Arnis competition in the Philipines once, on TV. These guys are really fast and go for each other. They wear plenty of protection for obvvious reasons, kind of like the Kendo guys.

Newfiedude, get yourself an instructional and a mate to practice with; that would be a start. Also you can shadow boxe, run, swim, stretch and increase your fitness so that when you start training you would be one step ahead of the other beginners.

Evan Tanner learnt submisisons initially with a video.

There is a site called Dogbrothers.com that has videos you can play showing some guys fighting and tells you about lessons and such. Sorry I can't post the link, but I'm not good on computers.

Cali Escrima is a philapino martialart. alot of it is based on foot work and throws, later on you learn to use your limbs for striking, sticks 1st{then other weapons} are used as an extention of your body

ya, there used to be an escrima class after my jujutsu class, alot of cops went to it. They mostly use short sticks, but also knives and fists, and fight practically the same way for each. Fast strikes and blocks, fight in close, and use sorta intricate movements, moreso than boxing, but less than most kungfu. You could probably just wiki it.

This art has many variations but their main component is the use bladed weapons ( to prevent injury they substituted wooden sticks instead of real weapons..)and knife fighting..this art is not considered a sport because its primary objective is to kill or to save lives, which could be your own or those of your love ones.. it is one of the most efficient art if you really want to learn self defense techniques...
