View Full Version : no gi world championships
Obi Narb Kenobi 12-06-2007, 04:37 AM ok so i toook 2nd in the world as a white belt in august, then a little while after i got my blue, and maybe a month after i got my blue i already took 2nd in the US open as a blue belt and i subbed everyone up to the finals. since then i've only gotten better
and now the no gi world championships are comming up and i'm thinking about doing them. however finals are coming up and i have not been training very much at all. i have a shit load of school work to do and i have little time to do it. and i'm kinda broke right now too.
the tournament costs about 90 dollars and it might be 120 by now, but i think i can scare up enough cash in that time to compete but i know i won't be in the best of shape.
the tournament will be tough, i've not been a blue belt very long and there will be a shit load of experienced blue belts in this tournament. but my experience is not too bad cause i did tap 4 blue belts at my last tournament and as i white belt i was really advanced for a guy who only trained for about 13 months. not to mention the guy who beat me in the worlds will for sure be there, and the guy who beat me at the US open will for sure be there, but i think i can beat both of those guys.
there is a good chance that i can take this tournament and get my name out there as a guy to watch for in the future, but that is if i'm in good shape which i am not. i've been eating a lot of ice cream, nachos, and abazabas while drinking sodas and red bulls for studying. i also can't train very much because of school, and i don't have 120 dollars to just throw away...
what would you guys do in my situation? would you do the tournament and maybe get some recognition if you took it? or would you not risk all dat cheddah being under trained, fat, and out of shape ging into a very hard competition?
its only 120 at most. its an amazing experience tho. think of all you can learn even if you dont do well. the absolute worst thing that can happen is you dont win. which wouldnt happen anyway if you dont do it.
Cameron 12-06-2007, 05:14 AM beautiful man that quote its so true that if you dont compet you lose so you mine as well do it
knockkraut 12-06-2007, 05:46 AM As Bas would say; If you never shoot, you will always miss. How much time do you have before the tourny? Fix up your diet, and train hard, then go for it!
Sloth 12-06-2007, 07:19 AM It's like a week and a half away which isn't much time. It's got to be an awesome experience, though. Why not bust your ass for the next 7 days with running and training, rest for a few days and train light and do your best at the tournament?
Even if you don't perform that great because of poor conditioning or whatever, at least you get more experience in a big tournament and maybe you will get a crack at the guys that beat you again. The money thing sounds tough. Is there any way that you could teach some of your buddies a one time basics class or something for $10 each to help pay your way into the tourney? That way you can get some cash and maybe get some of your friends into BJJ .
Hope that helps some, those are some of the ideas I've had when in similar circumstances.
Obi Narb Kenobi 12-06-2007, 07:32 AM edit: still not sure
you guys need to understand that i am so broke right now i don't even have 100 bucks to spend

would you rather eat ramen once a day for a few weeks after and know you did well or eat other stuff regularly and wonder about it for the next 50 years?
xhale 12-06-2007, 08:10 AM yah i cant afford it either 120 for me to lose in the first round??
but you would obviously have a much better shot than i would. i might be able to drop down to 160 but even then i would get owned.
what do you do for work narb? cause if you work at a gas station or convenience store i can tell you how to make easy legal money.
Obi Narb Kenobi 12-06-2007, 09:42 AM i work retail at a linens n things in fullerton, i can get the money, and it would be totally worth it if i place, hell i'll take third, but if i get knocked out in the first round uyyy that would suck especially because i think i can take the whole thing if in shape... i'm most likely going to do it, i'm just going to be pissed if i waste that cash.
fuck it, as long as i do well it'll be worth it, and i'm sure they'll hold the worlds here next year so then i'll be in good shape and be ready to get the gold
Obi Narb Kenobi 12-06-2007, 09:43 AM thanks to all that replied, reps all around

if you work a cash register, my suggestion to you is this. put a paper cup next to it with a picture of the logo for the tourney. make a little sign that says your dream is to compete in it but you cant afford it. leave some coin in it. youll have your monies in no time.
i did it at the gas station i worked at and made close to 500 in three weeks. the stranger what you want to do it, the more people seem to want to donate for.
xhale 12-07-2007, 12:15 AM notice how resin stays quiet during these type of threads...
Maybe you can talk to OTM, Budo Videos or some of the other companys that might want to sponsor a guy like you and feel out the companys to see if anyone might sponsor you in a hurry.
Tell them what you've told us in the first post. Xhale was able to get sponsorship from a beer company so who knows.
Where will this tournament be at and when?
Obi Narb Kenobi 12-09-2007, 08:15 PM the 15th at cal state domingez hills
the 15th at cal state domingez hills
A teammate of mine will be competing there so I expect to be there as a fan but doubt I'll enter as a competitor.
So if you decide to do it I'll probably be there watching.
