View Full Version : Randy Couture Workout for MMA Conditioning
budshower 11-27-2007, 06:46 AM Check this crazy little MMA workout by Randy Couture:
Do the Randy Couture workout if you’ve got a barbell and you want to get into fighting shape or even if you are a weekend MMA warrior. I’d start with the 45lb empty bar and work up. That way you won’t fall into the toilet the next day.
Do all of this MMA workout without letting go of the bar for the best conditioning effect:
Bent rows x8
Upright rows x8
Military press x8
Good morning x8
Lunges x8 (each leg)
Squat push press x8
Deadlift x8
1 minute’s rest. Do 3-5 sets depending on how much you feel like puking. This’ll build up good grappling muscle and help your cardio. If you’re confused about any of the exercises in this workout, let me know, I probably already have a video of it in the free weight video exercises section.
budshower 11-27-2007, 06:46 AM just did the work out last night pretty sore today
Can you explain the squat push press please.
hotnewton 11-27-2007, 07:42 AM Can you explain the squat push press please.
grab a pair of dumbbells... hold them like you are about to do a standing militry press... squat down, rise up and press the dumbbells up at the same time, repeat

faukemonster 11-27-2007, 06:10 PM Heres a video of the circuit:http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/mma+training/video/x3exzd_randy-couture-training-highlight_extreme
Sweet, cant wait to watch the video and try this when i get home tonight. thanks.
budshower 11-28-2007, 09:27 PM yeah its a killer work out i just started with the bar (45lbs.) but will work up

JohnMc 11-28-2007, 11:58 PM thanks.
budshower 11-29-2007, 03:14 AM they looked like 25lbs.
faukemonster 11-29-2007, 03:18 AM Think those were 25 pound weights randy was useing in that video or 10's? i couldnt tell
Not sure. Couture has used as much as 135 pounds. I can't recall which video it was but he did do a circuit with two 45 pounders plus the bar. I have the Team Quest WO video and in the video Nate Quarry demonstrates the exercise with I believe 25 pound bumper plates.
knockkraut 11-29-2007, 05:55 PM Thanks bro, I think I'll give this a shot.

That exercise with 45 plates on is unbelieveably hardcore......hell i wouldnt make it to the third set with just 25's on.....my god RANDY THE BEAST FTW!
JohnMc 11-30-2007, 07:05 PM How my times a week should this workout be done?
VENDO 12-02-2007, 08:43 AM I know for a fact Randy doesn't use this for his conditioning.

I think you'll find the premise of this statement impossible to defend based on its merits.

I've seen other training regimens of him, like in interviews he talks about stuff. He never mentions this one.

Interesting. Perhaps you can explain what these videos are then? Also, please address how this routine does not help Couture's conditioning, and how these examples can even exists when you would lead people to believe he "never mentions this one".

VENDO 12-04-2007, 08:18 AM Nah he doesn't do that.
I never said it doesn't help his conditioning.. it does, I'm just saying does Randy honestly do this solely for conditioning? I mean everytime..
I'm just skeptical.
TapOut136 12-04-2007, 08:36 AM I can tell that this pointless now because you really don't know what you think, what you mean, or how to say it. I'm not sure there is a single reference on this thread that claims Randy does the complex routine solely or every time (which obviously is a pleonasm and unnecessary even if you think they mean different things).
How can you now be skeptical about something you said you knew for a fact was false? Also, being skeptical now does little to support your erroneous claim.
deegs 12-04-2007, 09:32 AM who cares, it's not that great anyway

Obviously you care...
However, It's unclear what you think you actually understand about the history of this type of training, applied physiology, or sports science in general, that makes you able to comment so definitively.

+1.
TapOut136 12-04-2007, 10:45 PM +1.
Sounds like you care a fuck of alot to continue coming back. WOW plus one huh that's really impressive. Perhaps this is the end finally, thankfully, since you have nothing else to say and no means to defend the BS that you wrote.

This is just for entertainment.
It says it at the end of the tape.

He said it.. look..
"I will never release my true conditioning workout on video for the whole world to see".
See?
VENDO 12-04-2007, 11:47 PM naw but seriously..
He doesn't do this.
Let me guess you do this?
budshower 12-05-2007, 01:20 AM He obviously does the work out stop fighting i posted it for ppl tp see not to flame war about

by saying "who cares, it isn't in any way special", where in the fucking hell do you deduce that it means i care?
hey everyone, lets all move to backwards land!!
tapout136 is there waiting for us with inverted vaginas, the opposite of happiness, and poverty. but it's all good since it's backwards land! yay
deegs 12-05-2007, 05:53 AM seriously, it's a run of the mill muscular endurance workout. he and nate quarry have done it. it's not all they do. problem solved. there was no need to jump down anyone's throat, you insecure fuck.

Says the guy who thinks Mask's cock tastes good.
did this routine a few times....i likes it. only did it with the bar for the first 2 sets...then with 10 pound weights on each side for the last 2.....man is my lower back fucking SORE today.
its really good for just keeping your heart rate stay raceing....its not going to get you ripped or anything, but will definatly hook your cardio up....which is exactly what i need at the moment.
knockkraut 12-06-2007, 06:06 AM He must have done this workout a lot since his high school days:

Shogunownes 12-06-2007, 10:40 AM I've been doing this work out for about a month know. i love it , I'm losing a lot of fat and my body composition is way better. I use 20 lbs on each side and I do 6 sets.

How many times a week, and is this ALL you do exercise wise or just part of your regular routine?

Thats pretty good. Thats also alot of work in a short amount of time. If you think about it, you're doing 7 exercises, 8 reps each exercise(56 reps total). With 90 pounds you would be lifting 5040 pounds per set(56 reps multiplied by 90 pounds). 6 sets would total 30240 pounds! 15 tons! Alot of work there.
Shogunownes 12-07-2007, 10:43 AM I do it maybe twice a week if I'm lucky. I suppliment it in to my regular routine. I still have days I lift heavy and do regular cardio. I basically do this workout after I've hit every major muscle group for the week.
But yeah this work out will murder you, I couldn't complete it for the first five times I did it I'd say. I recomend only doing it after you've had a small meal. Even then I still get faint, I work so hard I can taste ketones on my breath.
Verity 12-08-2007, 02:24 PM Good Workout....tried it yesterday....people were looking at me weird...I was panting like a dog....:D

I'm going to try with the exact weights you used. I'm a bit worried about my back so I'll start off light. Then by the middle I'll be less worried about my back and more worried about my lungs. Then by the end I'll be less worried about my lungs and more worried about staying conscious while driving home.
kronker 01-23-2008, 09:16 PM Good Workout....tried it yesterday....people were looking at me weird...I was panting like a dog....:D
I've done a circuit training session at a regular gym with no circuit room and people tend to stare. Then fat people with no muscle will go to the bench with 45's on each side, growl as they press and arch their back to the limit that you think they might snap and die, like in a cartoon, then put the weight back down and strut around with their chests out.
Then I stare at them and make faces like "Oh no you didn't"
Rayco 01-26-2008, 05:23 PM Since i've read this thread i've added this circuit into my routine twice a week. I find this that this is a very good full body exercise and it has defiantly helped me a little in my grappling game.

Maybe he switches off. When you do the same thing over and over you get bored of the workout. So Randy probably switches it up every once an awhile.
