i just red on the gamepro website that the 40 gig does not play ps2 games or ps1 games. can anyone else cconferm this

It plays PS1 but not PS2, they had to cut the cost somewhere.

its a horrible mistake if you ask me but as long as they still sell PS2 backwards compatible machines in stores I guess its nice having the option for a cheaper PS3 if you just bought a PS2 slim

Yep, i bought one but i only wanted it for blu ray and the occasional game i might not get on 360. Still the cheapest blu-ray player out there at the moment AND its a PS3.

With the 80gig yes you can.

I was not concerned with playing PS2 games upon buying my PS3 which is why i didnt opt for the more expensive one.
