In his best performance in years, Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga (28-6-1, 22 KOs) sent "Ferocious" Fernando Vargas (26-5, 22 KOs) into retirement with a twelve round majority decision on Friday night at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. Mayorga tried to bum rush Vargas early and was clearly winning the round when he dropped Vargas at the end of round one. Mayorga wobbled Vargas again in round two. Vargas was cut over the right eye as both fighters landed big shots in the third. Vargas seemed to be coming on in the fourth round as Mayorga's aggressions became less frequent. Good two-way action in the fifth and sixth. Mayorga had a big round seven, but Vargas came back in the eighth. More good two-way action until Mayorga dropped Vargas again at the end of the eleventh. Round twelve was close. Scores were 114-112, 115-111 Mayorga, 113-113

It was a good fight and I never thought it would go the distance but it did.
Vargas hung tough after a shaky start and fought hard right till the final bell.
He can retire gracefully after this.Although he didnt get the win he never stopped punching back and pressing forward. He can go out holding his head high.
very close fight though..with the 2 KDs being the difference.

Cool..

I wasn't really interested in this fight. Despite the rigged weigh in fight.

His career started off great.
He just couldnt get past the great fighters like Oscar and Trinidad.
It wasnt a bad fight though.I thought it was gonna be over early after he got roughed up and decked by a body shot in the first rd.

Great fight. It was amazing to see Mayorga of all people actually backing off and boxing at points. I was very impressed. I didn't think Mayorga could win a decision, I figured he'd either catch Vargas with a big bomb and knock him out or Vargas would outclass him and win a dec.
