View Full Version : How do I counter a guillotine?
Goodkidcc 10-09-2007, 11:12 PM A friend of mine has been doing BJJ for a couple years. I have GREAT wrestling ability. Whenever we roll, he always locks a guillotine on me, but I always have an arm in. He is a little bitch and just uses that to stall out.
Is there a way to counter a guillotine with an arm in?

depends cause you can still get tappd wit your arm in. just keep your chin to your chest so the arm isn't lockd under ya neck and use your arm thats not lockd in to push down the arm on that side. works for me a lot.
or just get outta that shit when you see it comin, like when their tryin to wrap their arm around your head or pulling your head down.
Obi Narb Kenobi 10-09-2007, 11:54 PM old bass rutten trick is to make choking sounds even though you are not in danger, so the guy will strain himself trying to finish you and then when he is too tired, you stack him up, push his face away and pop your head out
xhale 10-10-2007, 12:39 AM i like palm against his chin and push back on it... or arm across the throat... but realistically the best way to defend would be to get side control.... pass his guard.
Jeff! 10-10-2007, 06:53 PM Just push his knees down and jump over his body to the opposite side of his guillo (into side control). You should be able to wiggle right out from there.

Goodkidcc 10-10-2007, 11:36 PM Oh and another major detail is that he cant take me down with it, and I always keep it standing. I want to learn how to counter a STANDING guillotine with 1 arm in. I already know I cant get tapped if I have an arm in. Im too strong (not tooting my own horn).
joshnbbjj 10-12-2007, 05:37 AM jump on his knees and try and force him down and fall to side mount.
YouFrgotPoland 10-22-2007, 12:42 AM I had a lot of problems with the Guillotine as well when I first tried transitioning from wrestling to Jits. If hes still standing with it or atleast isn't pulled into guard yet, and hes just kinda got his arms locked around ur neck, you can try to drag out. I'm sure when you used to wrestle and someone sprawled on you and got a front headlock you knew how to drag out of it right? Try it here, it has worked for me.
blevunly 10-22-2007, 12:50 AM Do that slam Rampage kept doing to Lindland. Where he used one of his hands to pick him up by the crotch and dump him
Resin 10-22-2007, 12:51 AM ^^ get to side control keep posture bring the forearm into his throat... he will release.

That's also another good method... but most the time there is no slamming in ran-dori
Radar 10-22-2007, 05:08 AM go purple and fall asleep - it works for me
bjjjeff 10-25-2007, 04:54 PM arm over the sholder standing that way when he lifts he's lifting your body not your neck

I'd recommend trying to take him down into side control. Especially because if he hangs onto the guillotine in side control (where it doesn't do anything) you can counter with the Von Flue choke.
knockkraut 10-26-2007, 06:25 PM So, if you want to counter a standing guillotine with arm in, which arm does he usually trap? Your inside or outside, in relation to him?
the mma miracle 11-08-2007, 07:19 PM if you are caught...make sure (and this goes for all of them), sit on your ass, dont posture up, cuz if he has full guard its easier for him to extend you and tap you..this is a posture choke not a strength choke...
three ways....
1. (and the one i LOVE to use in matchs ;)....cross face from the top...take your free arm, and forearm to the neck and push away while pulling your head out, its usually works.
2. take your free arm, throw it over his head (in front of his body) like grabbing for his shoulder and put your elbow in his head (that relieves a little pressure, ive never been tapped if i can get there)...from there stack into him and turn away from the choke and sneaking your caught arm in between his choke making a fist...this might be uncomfortable but he cant choke you from here....and then just work your head out by sliding out and pulling with your caught arm on his wrist...
3. if you are caught...just try and pass as best you can...if you can get a knee up and create some space to step through try that...but in my experience, this is my last option, i have a nasty habit of getting triangled when i try to escape from guillotine by passing...idk why...lol
ItBurnzWhenIP 12-01-2007, 04:59 AM simple - pull the knife out of your pocket and stab him between the 3rd and 4th ribs. Works every time

HAHA That Was Like Older PRIDE from What I Remember..
Resin 12-02-2007, 10:31 PM punch him.
prmike3 12-11-2007, 02:13 AM in the ufc most of the time when a guillotine is put on the fighter usually slams the opponent really hard on the mat from the standing guillotine and the opponent most of the time lets go or loosens up. in most tournaments there is no slamming on the opponent.

exactly. keep your chin to your chest and rotate your legs and hips to his side. breaks loose guillotines with the smallest amount of effort.
jukeboxhero 12-15-2007, 04:38 AM This is a great defense if your opponent has the guillotine sunk deep.

jetjaguar 12-15-2007, 08:06 AM put your traped arm agianst his neck/face and the other between his legs; lift him , dump him on his back
fscottbaio 12-16-2007, 03:46 AM Nice counter in that video.
Cameron 12-24-2007, 07:07 PM what i do is i take the arm out and stick my neck into it cause the deeper i stick it in the more i can stiffen it and the more i can get room to breath. i then at the same time am stacking the gaurd and putting my shoulder into his throat starting a choke of my owen. i then take my arm on the out side of the choke and put it behind his head to pull my self in more to sink my choke in more. i then focus on passing guard while my opponent is focusing on choking me and defending my choke.
note then there is usually to much for him to focus on so i will either get the choke from guard get out of the choke or pass guard. i have only been taped once and i get blues with this move.
the next thing i do once i pass guard is hop to side controle and drop my hip completly to the matt. i then put all my weight on my shoulder that is in his throat and grab my hadn thats behind his head. this forms a modified arm triangle
for an example of this see jason von flu vs alex karalexis. i use this all the time and it hella works and is a great trick the great thing is even blues keeps the guillotien once the person passes guard. so guys will get caught all day until the know its your move and until they know whats happening. ive gotten one guy like 8 times he still makes the same mistake.
note i dont know the name to the choke and if anyone dose please give it to me
Obi Narb Kenobi 12-24-2007, 09:43 PM bill cooper has a good way, the guy does almost like a hand stand to take any pressure away, but that's bill cooper

Correct. Stay on your feet and keep your butt high in the air while you do this so that he cannot get leverage to finish the move.
