Indian, Russian, Chinese Foreign Ministers to focus on transport, Information Technology and biotech

Setting will enable India to discuss reforms in the U.N.

China feels three could join hands in several fields

NEW DELHI: Foreign Ministers of India, China and Russia will hold a two-day meeting in the north-eastern Chinese city of Harbin from October 24 to promote and deepen strategic cooperation among themselves, according to diplomatic sources.

The deliberations will focus on taking forward the issues discussed at the previous `trilateral’ meeting of Foreign Minister here in February this year and an earlier one in Russia. The three sides also held their first-ever summit meeting in July last year in Russia. It was attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Chinese President Hu Jintao and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The three leaders exchanged views on promoting cooperation in a number of spheres. However, trilateral cooperation in the sphere of security is not on the immediate agenda.

The coming meeting of Foreign Ministers could see the three sides discussing the viability of broadening the cooperation agenda to include transport infrastructure, health and high-tech areas such as IT and biotechnology. The setting would enable India to discuss reforms in the United Nations, including the Security Council and gauge the support they could provide to New Delhi in this regard.

China feels the three countries could join hands in several fields, including trade, energy, science and technology to broaden strategic ties with each other. In this context, the meeting assumes significance because Beijing believes the forum of Foreign Ministers could be useful to chalk out a concrete roadmap.

Russia is of the view that as the three countries uphold the concept of a multi-polar world and frequently take similar stands at multilateral bodies, they could utilise the synergy to promote their domestic economic development.

India feels trilateral cooperation would help in contributing to peace and development in the region and the world at large. It has said this cooperation is not a grouping directed at any other nation or bloc.
