View Full Version : grappling with a much heavier stronger opponent
judoka7 10-02-2007, 06:50 AM Hi folks,
Just wondering how could someone possibly escape when held down by a much stronger heavier opponent.
It seems to me whatever escapes i do, it wouldn't work because of that strength factor. I basically lose the fight because i get pinned down for 25 seconds even if i try my best to get out.
Dr. Bob {ADR} 10-02-2007, 06:53 AM Instead of sweeping, look to slide out to their back.
Get an underhook on one side and try to follow it out under their shoulder.
VENDO 10-02-2007, 09:36 AM You need to talk to them, and tell them to lay off them twinkies and ding dongs.
Nick16watt 10-02-2007, 12:31 PM With big guys I try to get butterfly hooks. If that doesn't work I try to armdrag from guard and get to their back. If that doesn't work, I let them pass and try to scramble from there. heh
knockkraut 10-03-2007, 04:42 PM When they're bigger, you should be faster, so try to exploit that; when you first square off, and in the scrambles. Also, if you fight big guys a lot, you're probably going to be fighting off your back a lot. Work on you subs from the bottom, even if you can't lock in an armbar, triangle, or kimura, they can cause a scramble, where you'll have the upper hand with your speed.
xhale 10-03-2007, 05:16 PM good questions... everyone has seemed to hit some great points.
1. when in side control the most important thing is the underhook on the opposite side... so if hes on your left side yo need to have the underhook with your right arm underhooking his left. use your left arm across his throat or on the left side of his face... push to your left and try to slide out to your right or getting to your knees.
2. from guard need to work the variations, trap an arm go for an amrbar, if that dosnt work you have to be able to see it coming, quickly move to an omoplata or other variations... you have the triangle choke but its not locked in... change the position of your leg and extend the arm for an armbar. when trying to finish the bigger guys with the triangle choke dont forget to shirmp out but try to stay on your back... he will try to muscle you to your stomach to escape, you need to keep moving BACK or to the LEFT or RIGHT to keep him from turning your hips. if you have his right arm trapped in the trianlge that means he will try to turn you to your left which means you have to circle left etc.
3. work on keeping halfguard, dont let the bigger guys get full side control. if you have underhooks from half guard, scrambling to his back is that much easier. when attemping the sweep, always remember to go in the direction the oppenent is going, dont try to make it harder on your self and counter act his movment, its hard enough with an oppenent the same size, it will be even harder with a larger one. make sure to trap and move trap and move... dont make a move and use your energy if either of your hands are free... your hands should be doing something at all times... weather it be underhook, holding the wrist, overhook, on the elbow on the chin w/e. you need to take that ability to post with an arm or a leg to be able to sweep.
4. my biggest problem is looking for the submission, you will notice blackbelts are constantly on the offensive even when they are being defensive... constantly looking for the hole. now of course experience plays the largest role in being able to take advantage of your opponents mistakes but i really suggest watching lots and and lots of grappling videos if you have the time... its easy for me cuz i just sit here all day at work and watch old ADCC and Mundial matches, but if you're not able to do that you need to burn certain images into your head, and if your instructor isnt doing that by drilling and redrilling and redrilling certain things then it is important for you to do that on your own... take a larger opponent and have them work side control.... only go maybe 30% and try to work the escape... getting the underhook JUST before you know hes going to take side control, dont wait till you're in side control to try and get the underhook... thats what i learned from rolling with The Narb at his gym... that once he passed my guard i was fucked cuz hes got only about 15lbs over but that 15lbs is enough to make it extreamly difficult to get his underhook (that and he has excellent side control) so i started drilling it... with my training partner allowing him to pass my guard and just as i feel it happening go right for the underhook. so you have to think ahead dont wait till your fucked to defend... you dont defend the armbar once your in it... you defend it so it dosnt happen. Think of ever disadvantages position as submission move. "Have to defend side control, cant let him take my back, cant let him get the underhook... etc."
im sure i have more to say but if i dont stop now i dont think i ever will... hopfully some of this jargin is usefull
xhale 10-03-2007, 05:31 PM when i grappled 40oz there was a perfect time when i was trying to sweep him with the x-guard and fucked up cuz i didnt have his wrist... if i had control of his wrist you would have been on his back... but he pinned MY wrist down which allowed him to post...
even if you have perfect technique, but with just that one little thing missing... i didnt get it
Obi Narb Kenobi 10-03-2007, 06:04 PM i like half guard with big guys, well any guys half guard>full guard IMO

Nasty Nate 10-05-2007, 11:47 AM yea good shit xhale and thank you shogunownes for pointing that out or i may have never read it.
xhale 10-05-2007, 05:03 PM i just hope it actually helps
my instructor kept yelling at me yesterday becuase of the same thing... we were drilling a 1-2 punch combo to a take down (and i was drilling with a 120lbs asian girl) and when she would take me down i would wait till she was already in side control to try and get my underhooks on her. man my instructor gave me hell for it every single time untill i did it right... and shes so small and so tight (no pun inteneded) that it was very very very difficult to get my underhooks on her unless i used brute strength which is ok i guess but dont expect to overpower a larger opponent like shes a 120lbs asian girl.
so lesson learned.. im not an expert by any means i really wish some of the blue+ belts like Narb and TFZ would give some insight on this stuff as well.
Nasty Nate 10-05-2007, 05:11 PM hell yea bro...hopefully once i get my shit together i can get into some real training myself

hammafist jiu jitsu is in your area handle!
Obi Narb Kenobi 10-05-2007, 07:34 PM yah watch werdum marcelo and bravo... they all have excellent half guards.
other than marcelo i think the best half guard in the game is jeff glover's that guy has swept leo viera, javi, crane, and a bunch of other elite grapplers

pfft... don't count yourself short holms you hit the nail on the head, grappling with bigger guys sucks, you will end up on your back most likely... that'swhy i think half guard is better because it is hard to fully drop your weight on people when you get stuck in half guard.
but remember judoka that you should never be flat on your back always try to get a shoulder up and get under his body to set up sweeps

agente809 10-06-2007, 06:54 PM gotta love it when the little guys win.

i feel so bad for the guy... still looking for his first open weight championship
ricco's a dick by the way
agente809 10-06-2007, 09:33 PM i always wondered how fedor would do in this type of competition.
against bjj guys.

he was beating drysdale until he got caught in that darz... the darz is my favorite choke next time we roll i'll show you my set ups for it
xhale 10-08-2007, 04:15 PM i always wondered how fedor would do in this type of competition.
against bjj guys.
i think he would do fairly good becuase:
1. he is difficult to take down
2. he is difficult to keep down
3. becuase of his sambo background his scrambles are excellent which a lot of trraditional bjj guys dont know how to deal with
4. he keeps the pace and the action going becuase again in sambo no closed gaurds allowed so contant movment is a must or you end up in side control in a heartbeat.
i dont think he could beat the best... like roger... but im sure he can hang.

yah iv seen the vid... there is a series of no gi chokes in the training forum i posted a few months back that has that darz choke... i believe its spelled darse? unless it's another one

no you're right it's darse... that CHOKE IS GREAT FOOL!!!!!!!!!!! you can hit it from almost anywhere,it takes less energy than the anaconda and it is a fast tap too cause it hurts while it chokes
CJNewBernBJJ 10-11-2007, 06:39 PM i am one of the smaller guys in my gym i walk around at about 165 at most but the way i deal with the much bigger stronger guys is being quick and catching them in scrambles, most subs are hard to do when you are dealing with a stronger guy but if you catch them off guard its the best way, also try to stay away from side mount and stay off your back. Hope that helps.
bjjjeff 10-25-2007, 04:55 PM attack best defense is a good offense
kaiz77 10-27-2007, 10:21 PM I love challenging myself with larger opponents......makes you feel unstopable when you get the tap!!...
