Hey guys.i have been training in Muaythai for well over a year and recently started training MMA.Its my fourth lesson so far in MMA,and though i can handle myself standing up,once it goes to the ground im tapped senseless.

Our MMA class is not divided into beginners or intermediate. The class starts with some circuit training relevent to MMA(sprawl, shoot etc etc) then the coach teaches a specific move like what to do when you are in half guard and defending, then we practice the move with a partner in an mma setting then we learn another move and we practice that with few resisting partners.

the last 30 minutes is rolling with various guys there. And this is the sucky part. When i have full guard or half guard, its quite ok for me to handle myself(like reversing, sweeps and stuff) but when im in the back to the floor position(the position alot of bjj guys pull in mma) with the opponent standing they always manage to either get mount or side mount very very easily.usually by tossing my legs to the side and getting side control.

Im clueless when they get side control(other than placing my one foot on another foots knee to prevent mount) and i always get armbarred or kimuraed from there.

when they mount me,im also more or less dead as bridging doesnt seem to get them off. What can i do?

Was also wondering if there was any dvd series you would recommend for me to get a firm foundation in BJJ for MMA or Nogi setting, nothing spectacular as my two lessons a week isnt enough on its own.

Thanks fellas.

Thats just the way it is at first my friend. You have to train hard and work on the positions and then with time and experience you will notice that they have trouble passing you. One thing that helped me when i first started was to gain experience one technique at a time. For example, I had a lot of trouble keeping guys in my guard, so i spent like three months working only on this while rolling. I still learned new techniques during class but during grappling i just tried to keep guys in my guard. It helped me a lot. I have some friends that i train with that don't like doing it this way but it is just a suggestion. My trainer has only been doing this with arm triangle for over a year now and he is freaking amazing with them now. This is just a thought i am only a blue belt in BJJ so take this with a grain of salt. Keep training man, you will get there. As for dvd's the marcelo garcia series is awesome and you can get it in the training section. Getting out of side control with someone that is experienced is a pain in the ass, so just work on it, have guys start with you in that positions and then work on the escapes that are taught in class. It will come with time.

Train with more experienced people and maybe try to watch more videos of BJJ masters like BJ Penn and Marcelo Garcia competing in tournaments to get a fair idea of how they perform. Also, BJ Penn MMA Book Of Knowledge might be worth getting.

Well, if you're really looking for a good DVD, you should ask JT. I hear he watches a lot of them.

sit up when they, stand try to grab a leg.

Also, try toget underhooks when they are in gaurd and pull them down if you feel nervous about being passed. When they stand as xhale said grab their leg, also try and push their hips as you have a leg or ankle.

Also, what sub's are you lossing to?

learn and practice escapes first
recommendations DVD:
Marcelo Garcia c- series 3 on escapes
Gustavo Machado - Great Escapes

and it just takes time to get use to the flow & positions, maybe even just do strict BJJ for like a while... probably in like 3 months, u'll feel the difference. and u'll be tooling other noobs, while other noobs come to this board and ask the same questions. soooo... Patience my friend~!!!

my wrestling is weak, i focused on only ground work and now my takedown skills have suffered.

i loved wrestling though, it is such a great base for grappling and MMA.

T-Rex, and keep your legs in tight. Roll onto your side a lot. You won't get mounted anymore.

When they are standing, use your feet to hook your opponents legs for better control, and if your opponent does get side control, do everything you can to get your guard back; this includes shrimping, creating space, and trying to get a leg in to hopefully get your guard back or even half-guard works because you can always use the lock down (Eddie Bravo) or possibly get a sweep and give you a more dominant position.
