evil you there? i know you are the guy to go to about mustangs here.

anyway... 1995 mustang gt 5-speed w/ the 5.0 liter v8.

i want to start with some mild upgrades. it already has flowmasters which doesnt really add power, but at least it sounds nice. (maybe 1 HP? lol.) also a little K&N drop in filter. so yeah it's basically bone stock.

i am thinking heads, gears, and an underdrive pulley upgrade to start with.

any pointers? what do you think of the GT40 heads? i'd love some AFR 185's which are supposed to be amazing, but thats too damn expensive for me and i hear GT40's are great for a mild build up... should get me 30-40 HP on their own i'm thinking.

but i don't know THAT much about building up cars, so thats why i are made teh thread. any tips?

on a side note, i think its funny how rice burner drivers bolt on an exhaust system and think they have an extra 20 HP. no sorry guys, all that did was make it sound like a dirt devil on steroids.

I would start with a cold air intake and get rid of your stock mid pipe for a high flow off road X-pipe, full length headers are nice but they are a PITA to install. Gears would make a huge difference, what kinda driving do you do city/highway? You CAN'T go wrong with AFR heads and a good set of cams. Underdrive pullies arn't a bad idea but there only good for 10-15 crank HP at the most. You have to get a short throw shifter if you don't already have one, your going to kick youself when you feel the difference. In conclusion AFR heads and 4:10 gears FTW, but just to warn you once you start modding you can't stop.

if i can find a good deal, i'll definately get AFR heads. i read an article where they stuck AFRs on an otherwise stock 1991 5.0 and gained just under 100 HP. dunno if thats true or not. if it is, WOW!

as far as the gears, i have 3.73's on my 89 5.0 w/ AOD and it made a huge difference. i am wondering if 4.10 may be too extreme or not.

and yeah i've never used a short throw shifter. right now it has a LONG ass hurst shifter on it which really is annoying, i have no idea why the last owner installed it. here's a pic of how long it is, it's a little bit covered up by the steering wheel but you can still see it.

he gave me the original when i got the car, which i've been thinking of installing because it looks a lot better. but if i'm going to get a short throw i wont even bother doing that.

here's a few shifters i found: http://www.americanmuscle.com/94-98-mustang-shifters.html

If you don't to alot of highway driving go with 4:10s, don't fear the gear. You will probably have to upgrade your fuel injectors and maby even your fuel pump if you decide to go with AFR heads, not a big deal. Don't even think about getting the shifter, just do it. A pro 5.0 shortthrow shifter is like $150 at the most.

i do some highway driving, but not daily or anything. generally keep it under 80 mph. fuck it, 4.10's it is! vroom.

i will most likely get GT40's just because of price but i'll definitely be looking for a good deal on AFR like i was sayin.

so then... GT40's + pulley + short throw + set of cams + 4.10 = woot?

i'll save up a bit of cash and go for it. any rough estimate of what that would cost me, installed? i can install the pulley and shifter myself no problem, but i dont wanna mess with heads gears and cams, i'll probably break something.

I just got home from chilling at by friends house who has an 85 GT. He has AFR heads and appartently you can't go any bigger than 165 with the stock pistons. He thinks 4.10s will be too steep if you plan on doing heads and cam, but I think you would be fine especially with a good drag radial. You might want to play it safe and split the difference with some 3.90s, I still think 4.10 would be fine, but he knows more about the 5.0 than I do.

Underdrive pullies are easy to install, all you need is a foot pound torque wrench. MAKE SURE you follow the instructions for the crank bolt, DO NOT over/under torque the crank bolt. Shifter is a piece of cake. Heads and cam on a 5.0 isn't hard at all (unlike my car) all you need is basic hand tools. Gears are another story, your probably looking at $600 in labor, I had my differential rebuilt to a 31 spline 03 spec traction lock, 4.30 gears, 03 halfshafts, new bearings, aluminum bushings and 03 pinion brace. The labor for all that was $800, not bad at all considering its IRS.

As long as you know how to set the timing its not hard.
