View Full Version : Greatest time for boxing in the last 10 years?
ItBurnzWhenIP 08-28-2007, 05:27 AM I was watching Friday Night Fights and they were mentioning the superfights coming up over the next few months.
5 of the biggest fights the sport could make... Looks like boxings getting its ducks in a row
Sept. 29 Middleweight: #1 Jermain Taylor (27W 0L 0D) 17KO vs #2 Kelly Pavlik (31W 0L 0D) 28KO
Oct. 6 Super Featherweight: Top3pfp Manny Pacqiuao (44W 3L 2D) 35KO vs Marco Antonio Barrera (63W 5L 0D) 42KO Rematch
Nov. 3 Super Middleweight: #1 Joe Calzaghe (43W 0L 0D) 32KO vs #2 Mikkel Kessler (39W 0L 0D) 29KO 4 Title Unification

I hope...
ItBurnzWhenIP 08-28-2007, 05:29 AM I think Calzaghe Kessler is gonna be a fight of the year candidate. Vazquez Marquez II has set the bar pretty high though.
Blunt Object 08-28-2007, 05:29 AM I got
Kelly
MAB
Calzaghe
Shane
Hatton
ItBurnzWhenIP 08-28-2007, 06:03 AM Taylor by decision (Pavlik could win via KO though he has alot of power)
Pacqaiuo by KO
Kessler in the upset KO 10 (i'm just guessin here I have no idea really)
Mosley by decision
Hatton TKO 11
VENDO 08-28-2007, 06:15 AM WAR JERMAIN TAYLOR!
Beanflicker 08-28-2007, 02:32 PM I think we have MMA to thank for that. Now that MMA is providing serious compedition for boxing and stealing a lot of it's PPV money, I think the promoters now have a fire under their ass to make the big fights that people want to see. They won't be able to throw fights together and try to force feed them to the public anymore, its not going to work because people are just going to watch the next UFC instead.
But yeah this has been an amazing year for boxing and its only getting better,
Beanflicker 08-28-2007, 02:36 PM I'm really excited about the HW division too. If Peter captures Oleg's piece of the HW puzzle (and I think he will), I think the rematch with Wlad will be amazing.

Agreed 100% And I think ZUFFA/DANA has become complacent and is willing to feed MMA fans whatever matches they feel like cooking up because ZUFDA believes the fan will buy them whether those fights are PPV worthy or not. The exact complex that has gripped Don King, Gary Shaw and all the others and destroyed boxing over the last 10 years. Thankfully it seems boxing is realizing its reputation as the leading combat sport is in question if not completely crushed now and doing what needs to be done.

Also Agreed 100% Peter is gonna CRUSH Oleg (I kinda feel bad for the guy but at least he held a title for a while) and the rematch between the #1 and #2 heavyweight for the true heavyweight champion will be in place AND it will happen because the fighters, fans and managers will make it happen.
Beanflicker 08-29-2007, 02:20 AM As much as I like Peter though, I think Wlad will beat him again. Wlad is on another level IMO

Wlad is the best offensive heavyweight we've seen in a long long time and he doesn't have a glass chin, but he doesn't have an iron chin, and if Peters boxing skills keep improving like they did after the Tony fight... well lets just say it will make for the best competition Wlad will see in his career. I think Wlad can win another decision from him, but it will be a hard fought victory.
Beanflicker 08-30-2007, 02:37 AM Yeah I was impressed with Peter's performance against TOney the second time, before that I didn't really care for the guy and I thought TOney took him to school in the first fight and got robbed.
I agree with you about Wlad's jaw not being glass or iron. If guys think his chin is glass, they're going to have to go through a hailstorm of sledgehammer jabs and right hands to get to it
nice, its about time the promoters got there shit together.
time to kick it up a gear.
Oleg is actually a pretty good boxer, its just a question of whether or not he can avoid Peters big shot for the entire fight. If he can he has the skills to win on points.
Say Peter does get the W I agree with Bean and think Wlad will beat him up for 12 rds en route to a decision.
Wlad is by far the best offensive boxer puncher in the division.
ItBurnzWhenIP 09-08-2007, 03:18 AM Wlad is the best offensive fighter above 168 for godsake... Thats pretty scary. I saw an interveiw with Quinten Jackson and Zab Judah where Quinten was asked about how he would do pro boxing as a heavyweight, his response to being asked about fighting Klitschko? - I wouldn't fight that guy for nothing less than 20 million. Nice to see Quinten knows his boxing too

On a P4P ranking Id say Kessler is ahead of Wlad. They both have a great long range snappy offense with both hands but kessler also has a chin.
Wlad is undoubtedly the best HW since Lewis,he's honed his jab to perfection.

Hence I said ABOVE 168 :sifone:
