I'm a BJJ guy and spend most of my grappling on the ground. I'm pretty clueless when on my feet. How do you guys like to take a fight / match from standing to the ground? Do you prefer shooting in for the leg attack, or clinching and working a standing takedown? This is a sub grappling / gi question, not NHB.
With the shoot you always run the risk of the guillotine while the clinch can be useful for a trip or to set up a throw.

Clinch is better from a standing postion in MMA since you can punch your way into it pretty easily. You always have to alternate between shots and throws/trips though or you'll get choreographed.
It just sucks when your shot fails and a guy will giottine you like Rob said or just force you to roll into gaurd. Knees can be a nightmare.

I say clinch. Unless you're super-explosive, the clinch just seems like a safer option. That is, unless you run into a greco-roman wrestler, then you could be in for a world of hurt.

I think only run this risk if you don't shoot safely and keep your head glued to their body. But the clinch has way more options and is way safer!

set up your shots and the negatives of shooting wont be as much of a problem, but i prefer clinching personally. its all about what your better at.

When your in a clinch you and your match are in the same position, thats something to think about..
The only way you can pull off a shot is if your a better wrestler then the other guy, defending it is alot easier then actually doing it
so it all depends on what your more comfortable with, if you dont have much experiance shooting or with takedowns, stick to standing up

Use the clinch to set up the shot.

shoot = risk of knee on face or guillotine choke.
clinch = risk of knee or dirty boxing.

Athletic and explosive guys can shoot well.
I'm not aggressive enough to shoot across the floor like Mark Kerr, so I go clinch. It is more techniqual than the shoot, you gotta feel your opponents balance.
Pretty much every time I grapple I try to get low and then press up into them with my chest to put us both in an upright position, that's how I work best.

You however need to be strong in order to clinch and control someone right?

also a big problem is closing the distance to clinch, in mma its a lot harder, but also in no gi because you cant just grab the gi and force a clinch. in wrestling most guys prefer clinching but usually both guys want toi clinch

True, but you don't need to be as aggressive as you do in a shoot. Some people are just wired to where they can plow through guys, and then others hold back. Size and strength aside, I'm not mentally wired to where I can just plow through guys like the hammer house can. In any case, it's easy to stall and pick your moments in the clinch. If worse comes to worse, you can just drop your weight down and back while in the clinch to neutralize your opponent.

well i got to say this... for MMA i can't help you i would say clinch is better... but when it comes to grappling i say shoot
but shooting randomly is dumb, you need to set up your shot, and try and avoid doubles; outside singles and low singles are the best shots for BJJ gi or no gi.
if you clinch up it is easier for the guy to push at your hips and circle away, also if you have him close to you... he has you close to him too... it take more muscle to take people down in a clinch but like a previous poster said, you can use the clinch to set up your shot
