Horror movies are by and large terrible. With that said there are a few good ones.
...well the only good one that comes to mind is The Shining.

Mullholland Drive gives me the chills.I can't bring myself to watch Twin Peaks movie after that... I tried to a while ago and the seemingly innocuous intro just freaks me out.

True but what I mean is that it is really hard to invoke "horror" as opposed to comedy, drama, etc. Which is why so many horror movies are actually funny.

A Nightmare on Elmstreet, Jaws, The Exorcist, Shaun of the Dead.
Most of the horror movies out in theaters today really suck though.

The Exorcist has to be number one on every list. I used to close my eyes and run out of the room when they aired the promos for this movie.

I wouldn't call anything Lynch has done horror themed but he definitely has created more frightening imagery than any horror movie i've seen

For me...
1. The Shining
2. The Exorcist
3. Hellraiser
4. Rosemary's Baby

I'm a big fan of Mario Bava's old horror films too. Ones like "Kill, Baby, Kill" and "Black Sabbath".
