Recently I've seen a few ' What's better in a street fight...?' threads on various forums.

I'm NO expert at all but I've trained & practiced a bit with some excellent self protection teachers. I've also worked the odd door now & again.

The best for self defence is to learn self defence.

There's way more to it than stand up/clinch/ground - it starts before you even know you're gonna be attacked.

Check out Geof Thompson, Peter Consterdine, Kevin O'Hagan in the UK or Sammy Franco in the US.

One of the main lessons I learnt was that you've got to practice what you learn on a regular basis - just like you would boxing, BJJ, Judo, etc - or when the time comes that you need to use it.........

My only self protection is my MMA gloves I carry in my bag when I go to the gym.

SPIRIT= The willingness to die fighting transcends any form of fighting brothers...The styles are just the expressions of the SPIRIT..

i agree with this strongly, Jet Li explained this very good in Fearless when he compares styles to tea. this is why i claim jeet kune doo before anything else, its not a style but a state of mind.

serious reply - if you are serious about self defense, the first thing you need to understand is human psychology and the intricacies of human behavior. Then comes the martial arts and/or weapons training. Boxing + wrestling is best for the street imo.

krav maga is basically a rape prevention class. Eyes throat and nuts, claw and stomp. I think KM is kind of a gimmick.
