how can you travel through time when it doesnt exist?

So far they have said future travel maybe possible but going back would be impossible, unless you can create a black hole around your self and control it to an extent that you could pass out of the space time continuum and re enter and what ever time. But with current technology it would take thousands of years to even compute the kind of math we are thinking about.
