By Jose Reyes and Danny Quintanilla at ringside

In a sensational fight, Israel Vazquez (42-4, 32 KOs) regained his WBC super bantamweight against Rafael Marquez (37-4, 33 KOs) in a bloody slugfest at the Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, Texas. Both fighters traded bombs for the duration. In a classic round three, Marquez was rocked but came back to cut Vazquez over both eyes. Marquez was cut under the right eye. Both fighters continued to blast away and the right side of Vazquez' face was a mess after the end of round five. Vazquez dropped Marquez with a left hook early in the sixth and after a brutal follow up barrage the bout was stopped at the 1:16 mark. The stoppage seemed premature as Marquez was still fighting back when referee Guadalupe Garcia waved it off. Marquez said afterward that he didn't understand the stoppage, while Vazquez stated he would have stopped Marquez in the next round if he didn't get him in the sixth round. Both said they're open to a third fight, something all fight fans would like to see.

Im surprised Vasquez won this.
Sounds as though a rubber match is a must.

I hope for a third fight. Vasquez always seems to land that left hook.

The fight showed on showtime. And it wasn't even ppv believe it or not.It was available for ppv but if you subscribed to showtime you didn't have to buy it,which is a jip for those who shelled out the 24.95.

Great fight, even though it was stopped prematurely. When you have a war like that going on you have to let it go a little.Just like round 9 of Gatti/Ward I.Probably should have been stopped but it's classic bc it didn't and it's probably the best round of boxing ever.

Even with that taken into consideration,Marquez was still fighting back and, even if he was a lil out on his feet, deserved the benifit of the doubt until he was knocked down again.

Can't wait for the next one.

Watched the replay. Awesome fight can't wait for #3. I didn't think the stoppage was that bad. Marquez wasn't fighting back. If he was throwing with Vazquez it would be a different story but he was getting punished around the ring and not doing shit in return. Not the worst stoppage I've ever seen by a long shot.

I was planning to get the Morales-Diaz PPV for 45 dollars, but when i ordered it(Direct TV box), i forgot it was on the channel of the Vasquez-Marquez fight(don't have showtime, paid 25 bucks). I am glad i made that mistake.

Can't wait for the trilogy. I see Vasquez stopping Marquez again.
