Payment proccesors make a shit load of money when somebody receives a payment. That's how Paypal can afford to give away $5 for every referal... they make like $0.30 on every dollar spent...

That being said, there is usually a catch of some sorts... like you only get the $5 if the account stays active for 90 days or make a certain number of transactions...
