I have a friend who bought several rare books on Kosen Judo for reference, and the techniques looked exactly like Jiu Jitsu. I think the Gracie additions are more on their approach rather than actual techniques but not sure. I thought Oswaldo Alves, who's added quite a bit to Jiu-Jitsu, also trained in Japan. Possibly Kosen? I also thought I read that Yuki Nakai was originally from Kosen Judo which would explain why he was able to learn and advance in BJJ fast.

Kosen probably was the source, but they're is pretty different now. I've watched some of the videos on google, and have read some old books - Feldonkrais' Higher Judo is the best IMHO. The techniques are quite similar, but the approach is different as Himelick says.
BJJ seems to flow more than Kosen, which seems focussed more on executing a series of perfect techniques. Perhaps no-gi and vale tudo is the cause of the difference?

Yes your right. When I first started bjj i was very naive, and believed they invented groundfighting. It wasn't till later that I realised that triangles, kimuras. armbars, rncs, even the half guard existed for ages before in judo.

i could have sworn i read in an interview that yoshida trained with kosen for 5+ years
It's amazing how this stuff was passed down to us. I bet some that was lost has now been "invented" all over again. And, of course, there is more to come.
I just read one of the Wiki links. The terminolgy stuff gets old but the history lesson was cool. Even talked about how General McArthur pretty much put a major divide between the old judo and the modern sport judo.
