You're wrong.

It is backward compatible, but uses software emulation rather than including the Emotion Engine which was in the original 60GB units.

Which means it won't be able to play ALL the games. Just some of them.

Over 1700 games work with no issues or only minor issues, and all of the big games work. This is nothing like xbox backward compatibility.

Why is Sony doing this in the first place? What was so wrong with the original way?

probably cost management issues. they need to do something to make the system more consumer friendly and drop that humongous price tag. from what i gather the emulator is way cheaper than the emo-engine.

an emulator is software, the engine is hardware.

So are you going to have to download something for every game you play now. Because not having to do that was one of the plus's of the PS3

The emotion engine costs $27 to produce. The emulator costs nothing other than what they've paid the programmers to work on it.

No, you don't have to download anything. It's part of the firmware.

Uyyy, I am just glad I got the 60 gig now. Even though it just collects dust right now. When I do use it I only play Ps2 games.

Backwards compatibility is what made ps2 so good.
