Unbeaten Mayweather Gets Nod From Voters
Outspoken WBC welterweight and super welterweight boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. was named “Best Fighter” at the 2007 ESPY Awards tonight in Los Angeles, Calif. Mayweather outdistanced WBC featherweight champion Manny Paquiao and WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto in voting.
For the first time ever, mixed martial artists were nominated in the category formally known as “Best Boxer,” with Randy Couture and Quinton Jackson leading the sport’s most distinguished.
A standout in Japan’s PRIDE organization, Jackson bested longtime UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell with a first-round knockout at UFC 71 in May.
Couture, meanwhile, has earned a whopping six UFC titles between the light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions over the last 10 years. The 43-year-old trailblazer came out of retirement last March to challenge UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia at UFC 68. Couture waged a gripping five-round war against his 6-foot-10 foe, earning a unanimous decision.
ESPN will air the annual awards show at 9 PM EST Sunday.
THATS JUST STUPID..
blevunly 07-13-2007, 01:11 PM Well Floyd is better than Jackson and Couture in his sport, so I guess that makes sense. They should've had Fedor on there.
SolitaryIndividual 07-13-2007, 09:25 PM no it doesnt make any sense at all when the category is best fighter, because mma is as close to being a real fighter as is possible in sports these days. mayweather would get obliterated in mma. and also fedor should have been on the card, but maybe they figure he hasnt had enough action this year. notice the category was changed from "best boxer" to "best fighter"
blevunly 07-13-2007, 10:40 PM Well to be fair while MMA is looked at as closer to a real fight it's far from it. There are refs to stop the fight, rules to stop teamates from joining in or weapons being used or illegal techniques. So while MMA may be closer it's still nowhere near a real fight it is what it is a sport such as boxing is a sport. They are both combat sports and that is why I give Mayweather the nod. It's like comparing Micheal Jordan to Tiger Woods in who's the best athlete. You really have to go by acheivemets because If either crossover to the others sport of course they will be annilated.
It kind of makes sense, considering the fact that Mayweather won one of the most hyped boxing matches in a long time. Plus I think it's fair to say the Mayweather has more exposer from that fight than Quinton does and than Randy might have.
SolitaryIndividual 07-16-2007, 11:11 AM mma includes boxing, while boxing only includes BOXING... basketball and golf are too completely different sports
blevunly 07-16-2007, 03:31 PM Yeah it includes boxing much the same way Soccer includes sprinting. So if we were comparing a soccer player with a sprinter would we go off of their acheivements in their sport or just say "hey in soccer you have to run plus more, making the soccer player the superior athlete no matter who it is."
blevunly 07-16-2007, 03:33 PM BTW I watched th entire espys waiting for the fighter of the year and never saw it. Did anybody else catch it or was it even shown?

Sorry to rag on you, but you say "MMA is nowhere near a real fight"...How does one define a "real" fight anyhow? If two guys start exchanging words and then agree to step outside, where they square off and fight (and yes, it happens, I've seen it over and over), that's not a real fight? Cause I mean, normally, they tend to box it out as opposed to kicking each other in the nuts and biting each other's necks, and yet, that's how it happens to go down many times. Does there need to be guns? Do you have to be outnumbered? Fight to the death? When does it get real enough for you?
nakedrear 07-20-2007, 09:06 PM sorry. double post

I'm just saying people say MMA is closer to a real fight because they can do more stuff, but I'm saying it's still far from a real fight in that anything can happen in a real fight. Yes it can go down like a boxing match and maybe people don't use weapons like beer bottles or knives etc. But it doesn't change the fact that they could. The possibility for more options just isn't there in MMA. MMA is a sport same as boxing and should be taken as a sport nto a streetfight.
Are you saying Floyd shouldn't have gotten the award even though he's done more in his sport than Randy or Quinton in theirs?

i can't stand "mma fans" like you. any time something good goes in the direction of boxing and not your precious mma you start to bleed from your pussy. if it wasn't for boxing there would be no mma in america

And Fedor would get obliterated in boxing, no point in comparing apples with oranges.
