Calzaghe, Kessler to meet in title unification fight
July 11, 2007
LONDON (AP) -- Super middleweight champions Joe Calzaghe and Mikkel Kessler will fight Nov. 3 in Cardiff, Wales, in an eagerly anticipated matchup of unbeaten fighters, promoters announced Wednesday.
The fight for the undisputed 168-pound title will take place at the Millenium Stadium, where Calzaghe drew 35,000 fans for his last bout.
"This is not a fight that needs a lot of selling," promoter Frank Warren said. "It is a true fight against the two best in their division."
Calzaghe, from Newbridge, Wales, is 43-0 with 32 knockouts, while Kessler, from Copenhagen, Denmark, is 39-0 with 29 knockouts. Calzaghe stopped Peter Manfredo Jr. in the third round in his last fight on April 7, while Kessler is coming off a 12-round decision a month earlier over Librado Andrade.
Calzaghe, who is the IBF and WBO champion, has made 20 successful title defenses, while Kessler owns the WBA and WBC 168-pound titles.
