Between five and ten years depending on how fast you learn and how dedicated you are in your mat time.

I wouldnt get mine till I was 30, that sucks ass. I will just keep watching my Bas videos and say fuck lessons.
Depends on your gym. Personally i know a brown belt who schools black belts all day long and yet they still will not give him his black belt. Personally I think it's an ego trip crap... The whole BJJ scene is stupid.... They think strength doesn't matter and it's all technique which isn't true and if you believe that you should stop smoking so much weed. White Belts for life!

marcelo garcia made it to the finals in the absolute at adcc... he also tapped rico rodriguez, yeah strength matters but great technique is more important

if you're in the gym 10 hours a week (two hours a day for 5 days) after 4 years you will have enough hours which is required by the ibjjf/usjjf (international Brazilian jiu jitsu federation) but all of that could be bypassed if you win a championship

Getting a black belt should be about technical knowledge and ability, not who you can tap.

i believe in that... but if you're a purple belt and school your black belt instructor time after time after time again... you deserve the black.

Most teachers make sure that you spend time in a certain rank for a predetermined amount. Some teachers give sudden promotions due to winning competitions in that rank. Some guys are very talented but don't have the higher skills ( timing, technique, setups, etc) but they can tap the other guys due to athleticism and defense. Overall skill is not the only factor. Each head instructor looks at you as a person and a symbol of their school. Just cuase your good doesn't mean you deserve a black belt.

I think it still depends. If the purple belt has a big size or strength advantage, then he doesn't necessarily deserve a black belt. If the purple belt is really, really good at one thing that he catches his instructor with often, but doesn't have a well-rounded game, then he doesn't deserve a black belt.
If the instructor doesn't promote him because of stupid jiu jitsu politics, well that's just gay.

lets assume the belts are the same size respectively.
if you're a purple and you school browns and blacks... there should be no need for you to go to brown... i would say straight to black.

It's got to be technique and beating everyone else, in the gym and in competition. Being brazilian probably helps a bit too...

its all realitive to natural aptitude as well as detication mat time who your are training with. i mean if you are there 7days a week 5 hours a day with a high level guy then its not going to take that long. but if not it will i hear how ever that the average is 12 years roughly so if that helps

your a idiot strenght dose matter to some extent but not a lot. im 130 and roll with a guy that is 280 and guess what he cant tap me. all he can do is occasionaly muscle out of my subs and he gets possition easier because we are close to the same skill level so his strenght comes ins to play. but the brown belt instructor demos him dosnt matter his strength when you get to a high level of skill. hell i still sub the guy even thought he could break me in half becasue my sub game is better than his defence. skill beats size crack head. maby try training before talking.

It probably should be counted in hours rather than years since some guys now train so often that they can learn more in less amount of time (which is why more people are getting black belts sooner than the 10 or more years it used to take).
