Can purple belts teach ?

Yes. A lot of schools have purple belts teaching classes under direction of black belt.

Yep, a purple teaches at our gym but under the direction of a brown belt.

Even blue belts can teach if you're a beginner, although they would not run the class but more of a one-on-one kind of thing.

Private Lessons with a Brown Belt are $80 an hour.

Private Lessons with a Purple Belt are $60 an hour.

Private Lessons with a Blue Belt are $40 an hour.

40 bucks an hour to learn from a purple belt who has probably dumped 5k into his jiu jitsu classes.... not that bad :)

You can learn from anyone who knows something that you don't know. Even white belts can introduce you to new things.

Yup, I've been purple belts run classes before
I started training w/ my buddy who was a blue belt, I don't think they can run classes tho

I guess it would depend on the experience of the purple belt, his / her understanding of the positions, and the ability to communicate / transfer knowledge clearly.

But yes, purple belts can and do teach. There's actually quite few good ones.

When bjj first started in the uk, it was blue belts opening academies and teaching bjj. Nowadays there are still academies here taught by blues.
Don't agree with it personally. a black will know how a tech can be used in gi, no-gi and vale tudo, whereas blues just know the basics well and can apply them
