View Full Version : Colonel: Holyfield ready for title!
By Ray Wheatley
Hall of Famer Colonel Bob Sheridan called the Evander Holyfield vs Lou Savarese bout last Saturday and he feels that the "Real Deal" has what it takes to win the world heavyweight title again. "Based on Evander’s performance against Lou Saverese, he is ready for a world title opportunity,” declared The Colonel to FightNews. “Evander is on a mission to be undisputed world champion, so Kathy Duva (promoter of Main Events and Holyfield) may go for the winner of the Sultan Ibragamov vs. Ruslan Chagaev unification fight scheduled for Moscow on October 13th. Holyfield could take the winner of Brewster vs Klitschko scheduled for Saturday in Germany. I think Main Events would like Evander to fight again by October. The other title fight between Maskaev and Sam Peters is scheduled for October 6th in Madison Square Garden...so unless Holyfield is willing to stand on the sidelines for six more months, I feel the Brewster-Klitschko winner will get a big pay day to fight Holyfield.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sheridan continued: “Evander Holyfield can still sell pay-per-view television and his world wide name recognition is better than any of the present heavyweight champions. Most people feel Holyfield is a shot fighter, and I would have agreed based on his performances against James Toney and Larry Donald...but Evander is not a normal athlete. He is super human, he believes in himself, he's in top physical condition and I didn't see him misfire once against Saverese; so I’m convinced his work ethic, and conditioning will make him very competitive in any future world title fight. In fact in my opinion there isn't any heavyweight fighter in Ring Magazines most recent top 10 heavyweights that he can't beat, if he performs the way he did last Saturday in El Paso (against Savarese)."

its seems to me if the sport had the kind of talent it should in the top ranks it would be impossible for a man of his age to make that comeback
and then i remember a guy named Randy Couture

Most fighters when they get up in age just cant pull the trigger anymore.
I highly doubt Holy can beat Wlad or even Ibragadimov at this stage of his career.
I also think the 41 y'o savareses style helped holy look good and I take what colonal Bob says with a grain of salt too.
Still the division is so barren that someone like Holy who has name recognition
is a shoe in for a title shot.

Dude Savarese is NOTHING he fought TRAVIS THE IRONMAN FULTON only 3 fights ago - YES THAT FULTON. The MMA can crusher... Savarese isn't even top 25 much less in title contention. Kimbo would have put up a better fight with boxing gloves on.
For the record Boxrec.com (which is not always the best cause it kinda uses a mathmatical formula to calculate where fighters are) ranks Holy 51st in the division. To me that sounds about right... and Savarese is ranked... Not even in their top 200 I checked and double checked and actually looked all the way to 500 - who is Tommy Morrison. Thats how horrible Savarese has been of late. Thanks! Put Holy against Wlad - Sam Peter - Vitali any of the big three and they will carry him out on a stretcher.

After watching Brewster's showing against Klitschko on hbo today, one can't help but think Holyfield could do the same,if not better than Brewster. Not saying he would win by any means but one has to wonder if the fight would be better seeing Holyfield in Brewster's place.

Did you read nothing I posted above? Have you ever even heard of quality of opposition? Holy hasn't fought anybody better than some chump off the street since he came back. I think Kimbo is better than Lou Savarese at this point in his life as a boxer.

Holy's last LEGITIMATE win over a heavy that mattered was John Ruiz in 2000when he won a UD ekeing out a 1 point victory on 2 cards. He later beat Hasim Rahman but that was the fight where he continually headbutt Rahman until he could no longer continue because he had grown a baseball (no exaggeration) sized lump on his head. Holy is/was/always will be a steroid freak, headbutting POS and I hope he gets what he wants and gets a fight with like Sam Peter/Wladimir/Vitali and they beat him into a permanent retirement.
Here is the names and records of the opponents Holy has beaten since he started his "championship" comeback - after 3 straight losses to Chris Byrd on points, James Toney on a TKO when Holy's corner stopped the fight and the amazing Larry Donald when Holy was all but blown out on every card - he has rattled off wins against the formidable likes of
Jeremy Bates - TKO round 2 - a parttime fighter with a record of 21-14-1 which is impressive until you look at his wins which are all against cans. And see that fact that his job is to be a can for any heavy of note to crush mercilessly. Many many losses within 2 rounds to any name heavy (or even any heavy you MIGHT recognize their name)
Fres Oquendo (RECORD 27-4-0) (This is Holy's best win by far) - UD 12 scores 116 - 111 114-113 114-113 for Holy - Holy eeked out a decision against a guy that has recently fought um... Daniel Bispo and Javier Mora - Fighting Mora for the "Vacant WBO Latino Heavyweight Title" winning by UD but before those fights lost consecutive fights to Chris Byrd and John Ruiz in 2003-04 on points and a KO respectivly. By all accounts this fight was easily within Oquendo's ability to win if he had shown up at all.
Vinny Maddalone 27-4-0 but who recently lost a Technical Decision to 14-8 Julius Long on an unintentional headbutt which was later changed to a NC after a substance abuse violation. His last fight of note was with Brian Minto in 2005 when he was TKO'd in 7 rounds. Holy beat him TKO 3! This means Holy beat him down more than Brian Minto did.... Way to go Holy! (For the record Minto lost his first fight of note, his most recent fight, to Luan Krasniqi on a UD.
Lou Savarese - record of 46-7-0 - Age 41 turning 42 in 1 week - Last fight of note - Kirk Johnson March 2003 loss TKO 4 - Savarese has recently fought and beaten Matt Hicks (11-2-0 against all Uber-cans with no professional records save for his TKO loss), Travis "The Ironman" Fulton (15-18-0 all his wins coming against Uber-cans and noobies just like his MMA career), and Marcus Rhode (31-32-2 once again following the Uber-can crusher formula, This guy once fought and won against a guy with a record of 0-23-1 ASIDE: Why do even fight dude? Crack ain't that expensive)
DONT BELEIVE THE HYPE!!!! This is worse than the people that tryed to hype Mike Tyson when he was long longggg past his prime and even claimed he didn't want to fight anymore as still a contender.
THANKS - Don't be a sucker!

I gotta admire Evander's heart and courage, but PLEASE GOD do not put Holyfield in the ring against Wlad or Peters, he'll get killed or at least end up like McClellan or Michael Watson.
Gotta agree with IP's accessment of Holyfield's last couple of fights. The only real victory that impressed was against Fres Oquendo and personally I thought Holyfield got a decision that easily could have went the other way.
I dont know much but I know Holys management wanna keep him the fuck away from Wlad.

I stand by my statement. After seeing the last 2 Klitschko fights against Austin (Old and big,the announcers knew the fight would be short) and Brewer(Detached retina, inactive, champ broke his hand),which were both piss poor matches, I'm not sure how a Holyfield bout could fair worse.
Again,my statement was "it's hard not to think" and "one has to wonder" about the fight.Never said it should happen or that Holyfield would go a full 12.
So calm the fuck down and keep your man-crush on Kimbo to yourself.

At least Austin and Brewster have both beaten people in the top 200... Which Holy hasn't yet

You're not acknowledging the only point I was trying to make, which wasn't that Holyfield was a legit contender nor that he had real chance of winning the title.
Now if you're saying Holyfield could not put up an equal or better effort than either the Austin or Brewster yawnfests, more power to you.I'm simply stating otherwise.
I think we can both agree that the end result would be getting Holyfield to see the light and quit.....and try mixed martial arts....and fight Kimbo, just so we can disprove your lil kimbo theory;)

I agree he could probably give an equal performance as they did, but thats not really saying much because they both were made to look like amateurs.
But the reason I don't want to see this is because considering Holyfield's advanced age, his diminished reflexes and speed, and the amount of punishment he has already taken, Holyfield is much more likely to sustain serious damage against a hard hitter like Klitchko than Austin or Brewster.
Holyfield is a warrior and wouldn't quit like Brewster did if it seemed hopeless, he'd eat Wlads jabs and straight rights for 12 rounds if he could, and that aint good for Holyfield
