im taking classes at a local carlson gracie bjj gym here in orange county, southern california and im curioius as to the price everyone else is paying for there BJJ.

the rate for me is 2,000 for 15 months unlimited or 160 per month unlimited. Its a lot of money and I have gone down there and rolled for free once and the Teacher Franco De Camargo, he writes for grappling magazine, is very very good.

Im just curious to see what everyone else is paying for there BJJ. im not going to pay the full 160 and im goin to try and talk him down a little because im not going to be attending 2x a day, which is taking full advantage of the unlimited training.

camargo is an excellent teacher... and its a very nice gym iv been there a few times. my cousins both trained there back in the day when vitor belfort was training there 130 bucks a month is not the most expensive place iv seen but the price is definitely inflated due to the area its in (OC) machado in pasadena charges 125

gokor in hollywood charges 125 as well.. but becuase its a gracie gym you pay a little extra... weather it's better then all the others i suppose thats really up to the student.

i pay 50 bucks a month for a tiny dive gym in monterey park but we train MMA with gi's and the jiu jitsu style is more jap. you should check out http://www.ockickboxing.com/ every tournament iv been to (judo jiujitsu kickboxing) it never fails to see at least 1 guy in the top 3 in each weight class from that school. Cleber Luciano teaches bjj there... he got his black belt from royler and rickson.. and hes has also won a bjj championship

so check it out

I've never been to California, so I don't know what things are like out there; but $160 a month for unlimited classes with a good teacher seems totally reasonable.

most bjj gyms go by hours either how many hours you are taught or how many hours you do during the week.. im sure skill level plays a role also... how fast you learn

Keep a training log, and try to write down detailed notes of the moves you learn after each class. Review your notes a few weeks afterward, and try to visualize them. Think about all of the little details. That's what makes the difference between a properly executed move and a poorly executed move.

Always treat rolling as training, and not as a competition. Try to do the moves you learn instead of desperately sqeezing a guy's head to make him tap. Be a good training partner, and people will want to roll with you and help you. Don't do dickhead moves like trying to crush someone's jaw when you can't finish the rear naked choke.

The best advice I got was from my teacher in the first month of training:

Spend a long time working on your defense and escapes.
