Two different steroids detected in urine
By Karl Freitag
The California State Athletic Commission has levied a one year suspension on former world champion James "Lights Out" Toney. Toney tested positive for both Boldenone Metabolite and Stanozolol Metabolite after his May 24 fight against Danny Barchelder at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. Toney has been fined $2,500 and his suspension period runs from the conclusion of the bout until the end of his licensing year which is May 22, 2008. He will be close to 40 when he is eligible to return to the ring. Interestingly, Boldenone is an anabolic steroid developed primarily for horses and is only available through veterinary clinics. Stanozolol is the same steroid that boxer Fernando Vargas was suspended nine months for in 2002 by the Nevada Commission. This is Toney's second suspension for steroid use. After dethroning John Ruiz in 2005, Toney was suspended by the New York Commission and stripped of the WBA heavyweight title after testing positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone.
.................................................. ..................................................

At his age a 1 yr suspension is the last thing Toney needed.

As a HUUUUUGE Toney fan, I think this might be a good thing because it might force him to retire. I believe he still has the skills to be compeditive with any HW out there today, but his speech is becoming really slurred. I think he should pack it in, he's had an amazing career.

I agree.Hes not gonna make it to the top of the HW division and fighting sloppy 2nd tier HWs while risking brain damage is not a good thing.
We both know how stubborn James is when it comes to him admitting his best days r behind him .
I too hope this layoff is the start of his retirement.Wait 4 see.

I hate making lists, but Toney would definatly be in my list of the top 10 fighters of the last 20-25 years. Its a shame a lot of boxing fans know him as the guy who got whooped by RJJ and as the "fat tub of goo" HW cuz James was unbeleivablely talented and could do it all - box, counter punch, headhunt, fight in close, fight in the middle of the ring, James was just a master of the ring. Unfortunately he was on the receiving end of some really bad decisions (both Montell Griffen fights, first Sam Peter fight)...

Only the real purists appreciate Toney.
Hes fought from 160-HW and never been stopped. His chin and savvy are remarkable. He fought RJJ when badly dehydrated and weakened & still hung tough, and thats when Roy was at his best.

I don't hold the RJJ fight against Toney because I don't think there was a SMW who ever lived who could beat RJJ at that point in his career. The fact that RJJ didn't open up much or try hard for the KO says a lot about Toney IMO. That was when RJJ was knocking out everyone

Steroid use aint a big deal to me, there are tons of those guys using them and not getting caught, but it aint a big thing cuz steroids don't win you fights.

I mean it sucks that it happens and I'm definatly not saying I support steroid use, but it doesn't change the fact that Toney A) possesses incredible skills, B) had a magnificent career and C) had one of, if not THE most, entertaining personality in boxing. When I started boxing months back, the trainer and I were talking and I told him I had 18 DVDs of James Toney fights, he told me if you want a boxing masterclass study all Toney fights you can get your hands on. He's just an incredible fighter.

True, but to Meldrick's credit at least he's stayed retired (even though he retired waaay too late).

By the way, from what I hear James TOney's opponent also tested positive for steroids

All roids do is add bulk.Bulk doesnt help with stamina, speed or punch power.....the aspects relevant to giving a boxer an advantage.
Im not condoning it but rather putting it in perspective.Sprinters & explosive type sports are greatly enhanced by roid effects but not endurance athletes liike c'ship boxers.

Yeah... I mean look what happened when it came out that Holyfield might have been using roids. People were saying he wasn't an ATG anymore, I'm thinking "wait a sec, steroids didn't cushion his brain or his body to absorb blows from guys like Bowe and Tyson, it didn't magically make him strong and in shape so he didn't have to train, it didn't tell him when to throw a punch." I dunno man, it seems like people (not a shot at you Cam, just the majority of internet boxing fans) think that you inject steroids and thats it, thats all you need.

first off.... I had Peter winning the first fight by 2 rounds. Other than that I do think Tony is top 10-20 of the last 25 years... but there have been alot of great fighters in the last 25 years guys... I don't know if I can fit him in the top 10...

Mayweather, RJJ, Hopkins, DLH, Tommy Hearns, Hagler, Ray Leonard, Barrera/Morales/Pac, Tyson in his prime, Lennox Lewis, Holyroid, Calzaghe/Kessler, Kostya Tszyu, Larry Holmes, Mosley and many more. Toney is top 15 on any list I should say... but he is probably around 10 on my list. And I do beleive Roids can assist you on taking a punch. The fact that Toney no longer has a neck is testimony to that in my mind. He can get as hard as somebody can swing and his neck doesn't snap cause its so huge now. Thats just MO though I certainly could be wrong. I take nothing away from the way he masterfully rolls his shoulder to avoid most punches either.

I'll have to rewatch it to find the exact rounds I gave to Toney and Peter, but I had it 8 rounds to 4 for Toney, and one of the rounds I gave Peter was the round he lost a point for double rabit punching, so really I had it 8-3-1 for Toney - pure robbery, at least on my card.

If ur neck doesnt snap wouldnt that mean the head is taking more of a solid impact, and would in no way be an advantage.

I think IP is right, thick neck allows you to absorb the shock of a punch better, you're brain rattles inside your head a lot less if you neck aint movin.

This thread just made me depressed. Toney fought about 20 minutes from my house and I didn't hear a peep. I was walking down the street yesterday and a bus drove by with a Shamrock/Baroni poster. Weird.

Toney is a beast!

I love how he tried doing Roy Jones' taught, and Roy cracked him with a left hook. That was great.
