LabRat 06-14-2007, 07:52 PM I was using Kubuntu (Ubuntu with the KDE Desktop Environment) for a while. It was very nice, installed itself and literally all my hardware in 25mins flat but in the end I went back to Windows since I couldn't get Sonicstage to work in it, even with Wine and there's no Linux equivalent. With all my music being encoded in omg and my MP3 player and car stereo both using that format, I really had to go back. As cool as many of the graphic design progs are on Linux, I couldn't find any quarter decent Flash programs either I love Linux, I think Ubuntu and the other distros absolutely arserape Windows with a chainsaw, but unfortunately, Windows is where much of the best software resides and a lot of that gear doesn't work well with Wine, same with most games. Well worth making the switch if you don't use anything that's not supported too intensively though amanamagus 06-27-2007, 05:34 PM I need to try some open source operating system. Which one would you recommend. The one which is easy to install and use.?!? amanamagus 06-27-2007, 05:37 PM It must support yahoo messenger and gtalk. ferg [ADR] 06-29-2007, 05:08 AM ubuntu is a pretty good OS for sure. i run the Debian distribution (which ubuntu is actually based off of) and i love it to death. been using it for a few years now. www.debian.org truth be told it's geared towards a bit more advanced linux users than ubuntu is. if you've never used linux before, i'd recommend starting with ubuntu or mandrake linux. THEN AGAIN, i dove right in and started with debian when i began learning linux and i am very glad i did. not saying debian is exactly hard to use or anything. linux newbies may be a bit confused during the install procedure but it's easy if you are fairly computer literate. generally the most difficult to use distros of linux are gentoo and slackware. amanamagus 06-29-2007, 11:54 AM So I think I should start with Ubuntu. As I sidenote may I ask what are u doing these days Turd. ferg [ADR] 06-30-2007, 08:05 AM not too much man, just working and jacking off mostly :whack: amanamagus 06-30-2007, 08:14 AM I was talking about your area of expertise. Jacking off happens all the time. :) ferg [ADR] 07-01-2007, 07:35 AM oh, lol. well i'm still doing the same stuff. general PC repair. i have been looking around for some networking jobs though. my CCNA is expired, i should get it renewed and maybe i can score something nice. Nasty Nate 07-01-2007, 07:45 AM hmmm im thinkin about tryin this, maybe it will fix my sound. so i gotta clear my whole comp first right? xhale 07-01-2007, 11:42 PM hmmm im thinkin about tryin this, maybe it will fix my sound. so i gotta clear my whole comp first right? you could clear your comp... i did... saved everything to discs and i wrote the name wrong its not with an A its Ubuntu... my bad. Nasty Nate 07-01-2007, 11:46 PM i havnt cleared my comp yet, but i tried to just run the program and i cudnt find how to. does it only work if you clear it first? or am i just missing something? xhale 07-03-2007, 03:03 AM i havnt cleared my comp yet, but i tried to just run the program and i cudnt find how to. does it only work if you clear it first? or am i just missing something? no it should run.... you download the iso... and then burn it as an image onto a disc then all you have to do is run the disk from bootup it will load you might have to go to your bios and tell it to bot up from disk manually.. Squirrel 07-03-2007, 03:16 AM and i wrote the name wrong its not with an A its Ubuntu... my bad. Fixed. xhale 07-03-2007, 06:47 AM Fixed. nice buddy. amanamagus 07-08-2007, 11:38 AM How do I set up my internet connection on Ubantu deegs 01-26-2008, 08:35 AM just intalled the newest 64-bit version. soooo fast. recommend a nice window manager ? people seem to like beryl and compiz i think it is? ShadowoftheDarkgod 01-26-2008, 08:59 AM My laptop is dual booted to Red Hat and Windows. It really sucks since I really really want to use RH, but as posted, some softwares can't seem to run on RH (and some device doesn't seem to have the proper Driver for it). Also, its cool running programs via the command line. How Rude 01-26-2008, 03:53 PM So if I were to burn this OS to disc, install and if I dont like it I can just pop in my old windows xp disc in and i get windows back? RoryZilla 01-26-2008, 05:37 PM I started using Fedora 8 Intratech 01-26-2008, 05:46 PM Ubuntu is ok but I could never get it to browse my shares located on a windows machine. I went back to OpenSUSE 10.3. deegs 01-31-2008, 02:46 AM vista is pwnt via: ubuntu + compiz + awn + shane west-deegs hybrid brace yourselves http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m142/deegsitis/Screenshot.png http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m142/deegsitis/Screenshot-1.png http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m142/deegsitis/Screenshot-2.png http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m142/deegsitis/Screenshot-4.png http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m142/deegsitis/Screenshot-3.png beetsh 01-31-2008, 08:50 AM at least your having fun Intratech 02-04-2008, 01:26 AM Yeah, Linux pretty much pwnts Windows in everything including eye candy. The oneclick distribution of applications in OpenSUSE makes it easier to install apps on Linux than on Windows... and all the apps are free. MajorDiarrhea 02-19-2008, 08:29 PM if you want to use some of your window apps in Ubuntu you can use Wine to run it in Ubuntu. http://www.winehq.org/ it should be able to run a bunch of the software that runs in windows or if you are looking for an alternative to photoshop get Gimp www.gimp.org it does a lot of the things photoshop can do and its free. 12ninja 02-29-2008, 05:12 AM Hey I am currently using Kubuntu and I like it so far. It's a little tricky to use, but it's easy on my hard drive and it's fast!! Still learning more about it so if anyone has any tips holla!!!! GOD 02-29-2008, 03:52 PM I (being the idiot i am) decided to install Ubuntu,i thought i did it right for a dual boot(ubuntu or xp) and fucked something up and had to reinstall windows so now i have an unupdated windows on a different disk(that comp is not online at the moment) and managed to delete the ubuntu pre the 2nd windows boot,i also managed to do something to the old xp and am unable to format that disk cuz of the old xp remnants and just want to start over.it seemed pretty badass but i'm just gonna stick with xp until i know more about these things.ugh. ninjashoes 04-27-2008, 11:12 PM I have 2 harddrives now, one with Ubuntu and one with XP. I didnt even see this thread until today for some reason, I must be smoking some good crack. I agree with Deegs Ubuntu+Compiz is fuckin sweet. I mostly still run XP since I like to play a few games throughout my day but for web browsing and working on certain things I much prefer Ubuntu. xhale 05-03-2008, 04:32 AM :) ninjashoes 05-03-2008, 04:41 AM I (being the idiot i am) decided to install Ubuntu,i thought i did it right for a dual boot(ubuntu or xp) and fucked something up and had to reinstall windows so now i have an unupdated windows on a different disk(that comp is not online at the moment) and managed to delete the ubuntu pre the 2nd windows boot,i also managed to do something to the old xp and am unable to format that disk cuz of the old xp remnants and just want to start over.it seemed pretty badass but i'm just gonna stick with xp until i know more about these things.ugh. yeah I had a little trouble getting it to work, Linux can be tricky to get working but its a good learning experience vBulletin® v3.7.4, Copyright ©2000-2008, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. |
