"Well, if you wanna get techno about it..." LMAO
"If I hurt your feelings back there... SO FUCKING WHAT?"
I crack up almost every time I watch this.
Holmes is right though, he would give Marciano a WHOOPIN

Damn did Larry regret saying that.He never lived it down.He would've whipped Rocky IMO but Marciano was so loved & respected by those in the know that it turned many against him.
Beanflicker 06-09-2007, 11:20 PM True. I can understand why he said it though, they did that bogus computer fight with Rocky and Ali (Rocky wouldn't beat Ali in a million years), I guess he felt threatened that they'd try to pull that shit with him too. He might have been right about that "white hope" stuff too

Its probably the sort of thing Ali couldve said & got away with but Larry didnt have that kind personality or popularity to get away with it.
Its like how Ali used to be disrespectful to Frazier but everyone just blew it off cause they loved him.
ItBurnzWhenIP 06-10-2007, 05:09 AM Rocky a little too small and slow for Ali would dance circles around him and eventually cut him up with the jab. However if he got Ali cornered Ali wouldn't sucker him the same way he did Foreman. Marciano would have made Ali piss blood for a month along the ropes.
this is comparing 2 completely different eras. i dont like these comparisons too many variables and too difficult to come to a true conclusion

I don't think Ali/Marciano or Ali/Holmes comparisons are out of the question, I mean Muhammad Ali started only 5 years after Rocky retired. In their primes, all of them fought at a time when the average HW was around 200lbs, and nutritional and training methods were pretty much the same. So I don't think there are too many different variables, like there would be in comparing Marciano to say Wlad Klitchsko, who is fighting in a time where the average HW is around 230-245, and nutritional knowledge is more advanced.
I just don't see how Marciano could deal with guys like Holmes or Ali. Guys who were tough, rugged but could move so well and jab so effectively. A fighter like those two would pick Marciano apart IMO.

i agree on the ali part, but not quite as much with the holmes part. just MO
not saying marciano would run circles around holmes or anything.
If Marciano were fighting in the modern era hed be a cruiserweight, and hed make it easily. He fought at 187lbs I believe.
His opposition at that time were all small HWs.He did beat an old Louis & that big overweight pommy,Cockel I think his name was. Charles, & Moore were LHs & Walcott was 197.Had Rockys time been a few yrs later he'd have run into the bigger HWs like Liston,Williams & Terrel.
A young hungry Liston would be a bad night for the Rock I think.

i agree, but for the curcimstances at the time he did pretty well

He done real well.Marcianos one of my favourite fighters ever.He used to lock himself up for 6 mths to train for his fights. He never tired & he could bang hard.
He threw punches non stop & overwhelmed fighters like Charles & Moore.
I think it was the 2nd fight with Charles when Charles landed & sliced Rockys nose nearly in half.It was ugly and would've got stopped if Rocky hadnt gone wild & poured it on to KOed Charles in the next rd
In a P4P sense Rocky was awesome. He'd hammer the cruiser division in any era

WORD - With modern nuitrion and training techniques he could probably be closer to 200 lbs too... Marciano vs Holyfield would be one of the greatest fights you could ever come up with at Cruiser... Imagine that... The guy that knocks everybody out against the guy that couldn't be knocked out. Till he was way past his prime anyways. Hell put Marciano on the steroids Holy was on and he might fight at 215 - 220. Be like Tyson but with a way better chin though a good bit slower.
Marciano was an animal in the ring.He had that singlemindedness to just keep comin while throwing bombs with either hand untill his opponent couldnt take it anymore
Beanflicker 06-10-2007, 04:07 PM Yeah as much as I think people overrate the guy, you gotta admire his heart and determination.
I agree 100% about the Liston thing too. Liston was too big and strong, he would have gave Rocky a beatdown IMO. His jab would turn Rocky's face into ground beef.

Truth.
As much as I'd like to see the real life Rocky win I think Listons power & size difference would be too much.

Also agreed Liston would be a nightmare matchup for Rocky just based on the fact of the two styles of fighters
Rocky refused to come out of retirement to fight Patterson and Liston, people say it was because he was sick of paying his manager a % of his purse, fair enough though, he hated the guy
Beanflicker 06-11-2007, 06:31 PM I thought Rocky retired because of back problems? If that was the case it would be foolish for him to come back and fight either of those guys.
IMO both Patterson and Liston beat him. I'd give him a good chance against Patterson, but very little chance against Liston.
I think he would have KOed the rabbit
he retired because of the manager thing mostly, atleast thats what his brother said
