Holyfield says he plans to retire as heavyweight champion

EL PASO, Texas (AP) -- Evander Holyfield wants an unprecedented fifth heavyweight championship because he said he planned to retire with the title from the time he was an 8-year-old in a Georgia housing project.

The 44-year-old Holyfield, officially announcing his June 30 fight against Lou Savarese in El Paso, said Wednesday it doesn't matter that his plan would be more than 35 years in the making.

"Age ain't nothing but a number," Holyfield said.

The first three fights in Holyfield's comeback -- all victories -- also were in Texas. The latest in Corpus Christi was stopped in the third round because of bleeding from Vinny Maddalone's forehead.

Holyfield, 41-8 with two draws and 27 knockouts, also beat Fres Oquendo in San Antonio in November and Jeremy Bates in Dallas last August, his first fight in two years.

Savarese, a 41-year-old former title contender who came out of retirement in April for a shot at an elusive crown, is 46-6 with 38 knockouts. He didn't attend Wednesday's news conference.

"I'm only going to fight the people that allow me to be the heavyweight champion," Holyfield said.

While dismissing his age as a factor, Holyfield acknowledged that he can't train the same way he did when he won his first title as a 28-year-old.

"I run one day, I have to rest the next," he said. "I can't do it every day. My body won't let me."

His promoter, Kathy Duva of Main Events, said the Savarese fight has been dubbed "The Road to the Heavyweight Championship" and promises to propel the winner to bigger bouts.

I must admit that Holy did look pretty good last time out in his disposing of Maddalone. But then again Maddalone isn't world class so its hard to gauge him on that performance.
Holy is stubborn I'll give him that. He's been on that line for years now about "retiring as HW champ" & he's still trying.
In all honesty I can't see him beating Klitscho. He may beat one of the alphabet boys though & get a portion of the title.

they need to make up a fake title and hav him win it and pretend like he really is the champ. hes so fucked up in the head he might believe it and retire. it will be for his own good. i have always been a Real Deal fan but its borderline pitiful now. he does look good beating up bums, at least he can do that.

It'd more than likely feed his dillusion if he won a lesser title & he'd be more convinced he can unify the titles.
I've been hoping he'd just retire for years now,the beating Toney gave him was enough for me.

As much as I wish he'd retire for his own good, every fighter should have the right to fight while they are still able to pass the medicals. Holyfield has definately earned his right to try to go out how he wants to.

Meh, as much as it disheartens me to say so I have to agree. It is his decision to decide when to quit. I just don't want anything bad to happen to him, or risk potentially ending up like Ali.
