View Full Version : Gerald Mcclellan Appreciation Thread
Beanflicker 05-12-2007, 02:08 AM G-Man needs his own appreciation thread (he's the guy in my av). Maybe the most vicious puncher I've ever seen. Huge power in both hands with an incredible killer instinct.
Him vs Roy Jones at SMW would have been unbelievable, and who knows who would have took that fight (Gerald beat RJJ in the amateurs).

hell yeah, Gerald Mclellan was a killer puncher.
just look at his record, never wet the distance in a winning battle
he would have stopped or atleast taken a UD against Nigel Benn if it wasnt for the diving head butt
Beanflicker 05-12-2007, 02:28 AM never wet the distance in a winning battle tt
Only twice I think, but those were earlier in his career. I don't know if he would have beat Jones, but IMO he'd give him a whole world of trouble.
Beanflicker 05-12-2007, 02:31 AM I got an "interview/segment" CNN did on him on DVD, its really unfortunate to watch. He cant see and has barely any hearing. The guy literally had to scream in his left ear (the only one with a bit of hearing) for him to hear him.

according to boxrec he only went the distance twice early in his career and lost both times, have a look at how many 1st round knockouts lol
Beanflicker 05-12-2007, 02:33 AM He went the distance twice in a row in 1990. Once against Sanderline Williams, but to Geralds credit James Toney, Nigel Benn, Merqui Sosa couldn't knock Sanderline out either, he was a tough bastard.

one of those Highlight Tribute videos
Beanflicker 05-12-2007, 02:41 AM HOLY SHIT, get this: by the time John Mugabi fought Gerald Mcclellan, his record was 38-3-0 WITH 38 KNOCKOUTS. WHAT THE FUCK!
February 25th 2005 marked a decade. The tenth year that former middleweight champion Gerald McClellan has struggled with life since his fight with Nigel Benn left Gerald with permanent brain damage. It's been over a decade since McClellan and Benn battered each other close to death. McClellan has been under the constant care of his two sisters, Lisa and Sandra, since. The war of 1995 left him blind, partially deaf and unable to care for himself.
Today it costs approximately $70,000 per year to take care of Gerald and pay for the round-the-clock assistance that he requires. Astronomical medical bills and the costs of his yearly care have sadly exhausted all of the money that he has earned as a professional prize fighter. For this reason, Gerald and his family rely solely on donations to the Gerald McClellan Trust to care for him.

G-Man vs Roy Jones.... That would've been sick as hell.

I DLed & watched that fight & that head butt is what did the damage.Such a tragedy when a great fighter gets cut down in his prime like that.
G-man took out 2 of the greatest punchers ever in Mugabi & Jackson.
Hardcore-Muay-Thai 05-12-2007, 07:14 AM what happend to him? head butt?
what happend to him? head butt?
I think its halfway through round 8 when Benn falls over and on the way down clashes heads with McClellan, Gerald took a knee but the idiot ref told him to get back up and fight, so the next few rounds Benn kept landing punches on the same spot Gerald took the head butt
its pretty obvious re watching the fight that the head butt changed the fight and hurt Gerald bad
Benn had nothing left
Beanflicker 05-12-2007, 08:16 AM The headbutt was a big factor, but I think the damage was started in earlier rounds, probably by Benn's punching in the back of the head, because McClellan had so much trouble keeping his mouthpiece in his mouth.
Incredible war, and I give Nigel all the credit in the world for suriving the first round, he showed unbelievable courage.
There are a lot of sad stories in boxing but Mcclellan's is one of the saddest, the guy has lived the past 12 years in a world of blackness and very little hearing. He has kids and he can't even watch them grow up. Not only that but his sisters have pretty much sacraficed their lives to care for him 24/7. Its really really unfortunate shit.
I have a lot of respect for Roy Jones, because he's one of the only ones who has been contributing money to Gerald since day one.
Beanflicker 05-12-2007, 08:17 AM PS. I still can't get over the fact that at one point John Mugabi was 38-3-0 WITH 38 FUCKING KNOCKOUTS. That is unbelievable, I knew Mugabi hit like a mule but that is an incredible statistic!
Beanflicker 05-12-2007, 08:39 AM Heres some more on the potential causes of his brain injury...
"Looking past Benn was his first mistake. Benn, whilst susceptible to going down at times, was an incredibily resolute fighter, who, like McClellan, had a good amateur heritage and was a huge puncher.
Ill preparation was his second. He fell out with Manny Steward before the Benn fight, who I firmly believe would have seen Gerald to victory. Instead, he went with his old acquaintance Stan Johnston, a part-time heavyweight pro in a dodgy sailor hat. McClellan weighed in a full three pounds under the super-middle limit, whilst Benn (as usual) was bang on the money at 168lbs. Whether or not he overtrained, that lack of weight would prove crucial later on.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, he wrapped his own hands before the fight, which is an absolute no-no. Wrapping your own hands takes away from the impact of your punches as it's not possible to achieve the same tightness in your wraps doing it yourself as it is with an experienced trainer. This, combined with the comparative weight disparity will have lessened McClellan's punching power. Clearly he was still a devasting hitter with that handicap, as evidenced by his first round near-destruction of Benn, but I believe that if he was on weight and had his hands wrapped, even with the long count the referee gave Benn, there was no way he would have made it through that first round.
McClellan refused to believe Benn could withstand his power until it was too late. He figured out something was wrong by the sixth round, but by then, there was no turning back and no way he could back down. Benn, to his credit, fought his heart out and was competely spent himself by the end, when McClellan apparently quit on one knee in the tenth. What wasn't obvious to people watching was that his body was shutting down and his brain was already damaged beyond repair."
Fuck thats bad, the risks in boxing far outweigh the risks in MMA for head damage, MMA you will fuck up your joints, Boxing will just fuck you up
God I love it
Boxing has far greater risks than mma.
A boxer cant take his opponent down when he's in trouble,he just has to man up & try to take or avoid whats coming.
I love how many times I can get the word "fuck" into a 3 sentence post
