View Full Version : Need Serious Help For Sanshou Tournament
Cung-Le 05-10-2007, 07:50 AM I an't the best (i'll admit, i think i am the weakest ninjabro) n i gots this tournament coming up on june.2, 2007. I need serious workout tips n training. I am in kung-fu(yes......kung-fu, i like it cuz its fancy; but it dosn't really teach us how to fight) and sanda(which is like a fighting style of kung-fu; i think its pretty shitty). For those of you who don't know what a sanshou fight is, it is what Cung Le Is a master at. [Sanshou is basicly a stand up fight wit no knees or elbows, you can take down your opponent; but as soon as some one gets taking down, the ref stands you back up. And you can clinch for only 2 seconds, after 2 secs the ref will split you guys back up.]
I really need help on training, but at the same time, i gotta balance school (6 hrs), n hw (get about 3 hrs of hw). My training right now is just lifting weights after school n working on the punching bags.
Any help n feed back would be great =D =D
Cung-Le 05-10-2007, 07:52 AM P.S: i have looked at the training Instructionals already.
Tom Stall 05-10-2007, 07:59 AM don't you have an instructor???
Cung-Le 05-10-2007, 08:01 AM don't you have an instructor???
Yes but to be honest, he really really sucks shit....the only reason i'm still in that class is cuz its the nearest n cheapest club around here =(
The Revolutionary fight team (kalib starnes trains there) is in surrey which is too far from where i live 30 km away (i don't have a car yet, n if i bus, i won't have time for school n stuff)
Tom Stall 05-10-2007, 08:23 AM i don't think you should compete if you don't have proper training. sanda is fought on a tai which is a stage and you can really get thrown off that stage. if you insist on fighting. i think you should just concentrate on the cardio aspect since thats like 50% of the fight.

Sorry I don't have any help for you but you live near Surrey??? That's crazy man, I'm about 200km away... fuck, Small world
hotnewton 05-10-2007, 08:25 AM ^^^^ I also have a shit load of family and friends in Surrey and the surrounding area...
Good luck on your tourney though, I hope you get the help you need
I hate to say it but seems like you need a new style if you're not learning anything and you think its shitty. Best of luck to you

I've been trying to find a new club, but there are no clubs around here (that i can walk or bike to) =(
Cung-Le 05-10-2007, 04:12 PM The shitty thing about the tourney is that there is no 1 to support me....i wanna tape it n post it on here but my family are all b z wit work =(
FRITZ Aint no bitch Diaz 05-11-2007, 04:35 AM is this a joke?
Cung-Le 05-11-2007, 04:24 PM is this a joke?
no i'm not =(
Tom Stall 05-11-2007, 09:01 PM i think you shouldn't go the tournament at all. you don't even have a cornerman. its like going to race in formula 1 race and not knowing how to drive properly or have a pit crew

I've thought about it, but its only a "small" tourney.....n i really don't care if i get my ass kicked.......at least i tried =D thats all that matters =D
(we have head and body gear, so i won't get hurt that much)
CreatureCore 05-14-2007, 07:22 PM Iv fought one San Da fight, which is basically the same thing. Pretty much everyone who fights in those are muay thai or kick boxing trained who also have learned throws. If i where you unless you have a good muay thai fighting style i wouldnt go.
I dont know much about Kung-Fu but when i hear the name i dont think of kick boxing. I just cant see Kung-Fu helping you much in what is pretty much a kick boxing fight with throws.
CreatureCore 05-14-2007, 07:28 PM For those intrested heres a page from my gyms website explaining San Shou and a brief history of it.
The EDGE teaches San Shou and San Da techniques as part of it's Muay Thai program to allow it's fighters the opportunity to fight in San Da matches. The EDGE is a member of The King of San Da USA to further the sport including increasing communication between the coaches, athletes and promoters. San Shou is the official full contact fighting sport of modern Wushu which is rapidly growing in popularity both in the US and abroad. As an integral part of most Wushu competitions, San Shou has been an important event at the World Wushu Championships since its inception in 1991. Presently San Shou competitions are held in over 75 countries world wide. Recently San Shou has also become a professional sport in America.
The word "San Shou" also spelled "Sanda" translates as "unbound hand" and refers to free fighting where the rules are designed to most accurately simulate actual combat. San Shou matches are fought on a raised platform called the "Lei Tai". Historically, the Lei Tai dates back centuries in China where challenge matches were fought both bare handed and with weapons with no rules- often resulting in death or serious injury. At the National Chinese tournament in Nanking in 1928, the fights on the Lei Tai were so brutal that 12 contestants were not permitted to fight for fear of killing off some of the great masters of the time. So changes were needed!
Modern San Shou developed into a sport about the same time as modern Wushu during the 1960's by the Chinese Government. In order to define a standard kung fu fighting style, the great masters from all over China were given the task of organizing the huge heritage of Chinese Martial Arts in to a system of rules in which different styles could compete. Protective equipment was also added to further reduce the risk of serious injury.
The rules of San Shou allow for a wide array of full contact punching, kicking, takedowns and throws derived from the traditional application of Chinese Martial Arts. Finished hold (chokes, arm locks etc.) have been excluded from the rules which forces the fight to continue at a fast pace. San Shou addresses the three ranges of fighting- kicking, punching and grappling which adds realism to the sport. A fighter can win by a knockout or by points, points are also awarded for the techniques according to effectivenes. In a tournament, you fight for 2 rounds of 2 minutes each, plus a third round in case the first 2 score even. Forcing the opponent off of the platform is also a major technique of San Shou. Most matches in the United States employ the use of a boxing ring instead of a platform to comply with state athletic commissions.
Kundurp 05-14-2007, 10:09 PM Do what I do for fights, my place is hella far so I got a cheap bag and developed simple drills for hand speed and find a firend with mutual interest in MMA and watch videos, highlights, matches and fuck around.

Lol thats wut i do....after school i go and work on my cardio: running, skipping and punching bag drills.
(the tournament isn't gonna b on a high flattform. Its just a squared matt on normal grounds)
Cung-Le 06-05-2007, 01:23 AM ok so heres how it fucking went............. I came for attendence, n i found out that i was the only one in my divison(114-123 pounds). They told me at the end i get to pick "ANYONE" to fight, and still get a gold metal;win or lose. So then the end came and i asked "do i get to fight now?". Then the Ref said "srry man, every one is tired, just take the gold n go." So 10 mins after i got my metal, i found 2 other guys around my weight(but not exactly) n they both got gold metals too n they both didn't fight either, n they both said that the ref told them the exact same thing!
So basicly i got a meaning-less gold, n worked my ass off for noting....... =(
But i did met a guy that was in kung-fu hustle =)

hotnewton 06-05-2007, 01:41 AM Fuck eh?
Oh well, if anybody asks, tell them you beat all 10 guys in your weight class then moved up in weight class 6 times to fight the top guys from each class, tell them you finally lost in your 17th fight to a guy who was like 60lbs heavier than you, and you got the gold for being 100% badass
