I have to vent: Most people working nonoplatas and tacochokes and Kangaroo-locks still can't pass a guard properly.

If you are not one of these, disregard. If you are one of the many trying to do these moves and you don't even have your blue yet, please punch yourself in the sack. Thank you.

I will have to agree. This is why my knee is hurt and healing. Get the basics down first. I learned my lesson you don't have to.

The problem with beautiful technique like that is it becomes lost in the scramble of MMA which is why you only see basic submissions and transitions most of the time. I've found myself successful in submissions in my fights and grappling tournaments just because I know the basic submissions and can control my body positioning in a scramble.

I kinda wish the American public would become more knowledgeable of grappling off MMA so it can be fleshed out into a spectator sport, it's truly awesome to watch and compete in.

Wow, I learned the EXACT same, brutally harsh lesson. In my early BJJ career, I experimented with crazy pretzel-leg moves (before I even knew of Bravo, mind you). I really pushed the limits of my flexibility, then I popped out my knee. Then the other knee. Apparently, once didn't get the point across.

Now I'm a BIG fan of the basics. Check the sherdog fightfinder stats. Like 80% of all submission victories are armbars. Triangles and RNC's comprise the vast majority of the remaining 20%. And then you have your others in like a tiny little 3% wedge.

The basics rule the grappling game, not to mention striking, wrestling etc. You can beat the BEST guys out there with nothing but flawless fundamentals. The other stuff is just extra cheese on the omelet.

Indeed. One good thing: Roger is bringing back fundamentals. He is pwning guys with nothing but old school, no-nonsense moves. The dude is hitting the ANKLE-GRAB sweep on fucking decorated blackbelts. The armbar he hit on Jacare was out of the 1992 version of Royce's Gracie Jiu-jitsu Vol. 1

And yah, BJJ is fun to watch. I'll be damned if it can't compete with curling and ultimate frisbee.
