On topic, I am a longshoreman in the LA/Long Beach Harbor. Near Rdrvgs work I presume. I drive 50' tall machines and try not to make them topple over. One guy was unsuccessful at that last week and it was an interesting sight. It's usually boring there except when someone gets crushed, like what happened to a trucker last week in another incident, but that excitement is not something we hope for.

PMA is the payroll company for all of the longshoreman in the harbor. They also negotiate contracts on behalf of the various companys with the union (ILWU). I work out of the ILWU dispatch hall and go to different port terminals on different weeks. There are like twenty terminals but I usually work at the one near the Queen Mary called SSA.

I was a casual longshoreman for 3 years, Class B for 2 years, and have been class A (like Journeyman) for 3. In 2 more years I will have more options at work. Driving cranes, etc.

That's cool. I have a friend who got in the last round. I never put my postcard in. I didn't want to have to learn a new trade again. I allready have been an Electrician now I am a Inst. Fitter and a supervisor.

We just had a burn out 3 months ago we just got the unit up. At the same time another unit was brought down for upgrades. When one refinery raises prices all refinerys raise prices.

Yeah the new casuals have to be poor for years before they get to work full time. Not worth it for most people with a good job. I still am catching up on those years of being poor and building debt. I am proud to be almost at ZERO with debt.

It has taken a long time to get good at my job. Sometimes work runs out and we get laid off. Being a Casual would help to fill in those gaps I probably will put in a card next time.

Because of the relationship between our government and oil companys you have job security.

Because of America's addiction to outsourcing and buying from sweatshops I have job security.

Ethanol and Tariffs are things that I like but would hurt both of us at work.

Acually Ethanol plants being built would help me. They need someone to install the process controls, and thats my job. I believe the oil companys will be the ones producing the ethanol.

They will drag their feet unless company's other than Exxon/mobil, Chevron, Valero, Conoco/philips, and BP
start to take hold of that industry. Then they will have to step up their game.

Alternative fuels will be good for the consumer. Prices will fall due to competition.
