View Full Version : Do you train and what do you train in?
MMAsterkillah 05-31-2006, 02:23 AM In the past I have trained and fought in just the stand up aspect of mix martial arts, and actually not MMA at all, but boxing. For years I have been in love with the sport of boxing and when I was about 10 I got into tons of fights at school. I was urged to join a boxing club by my teachers and family and I did. I then fought 5 amateur fights against older opponents as a 135 pound LW when I was 17. I was 4-1 in these fights and showed good handspeed and conditioning. I stopped boxing as I lost interest (which was shown in my final match when I lost to a below average IMO 125 pound featherweight and I became infatuated with other sports as the seasons changed. I just didn't have discipline to continue which is pretty much why I don't currently train. I currently have friends who train in MSA (with Keith Rockel and Matt Lee) in MA and have done very well for themselves. I will probably train in BJJ, wrestling and Muay Thai eventually but the discipline it takes to train consistently is too much for me to take right now. My wrestling would have to be my weakest point of fighting, because I have no experience in that area, and my build 5'10" 155 isn't exactly short and stocky. My MMA overall is fairly weak, and nowhere near competition ready as I have said, but I think because my groundgame is ok, and my striking is definitely good I am a solid fighter.
ninjashoes 06-01-2006, 10:45 PM high school wrestling, a few lessons of Judo, probably will take muay thai and Judo or BJJ if I get serious about mma. Im more of a fan if anything but I would love to be in Pride some day.
Rdrvgs 06-02-2006, 03:31 AM I tried karate when I was younger but I saw too many holes in that style
early. I took some boxing. And a few lessons with Machado when they had a studio in my home town San Pedro CA. Gracie Jiu jitsu in torrance Ca is only 15 miles away but its class schedule is not compatible with mine.

alpha82425 06-08-2006, 12:53 AM Lets see...I use to get picked on as a kid until my gramps taught me how to box around 2nd grade and been training in that ever since...also was a wrestler in HS and transitioned that into BJJ...I really want to take muay thai but I'm in school and on a budget...not to mention that BJJ classes charge a lot (but it's more then worth it).
Resin 06-08-2006, 04:10 AM I love boxing.
nzjujitsu 06-08-2006, 05:14 AM i dont like kicking im unco
MMAsterkillah 06-08-2006, 09:54 PM i need to work on my wrestling. i fucked around wit by buddy who trains in BJJ, Wrestling, Boxing and Muay Thai. The kid could whip my ass (hes slim as hell at about 205). Im about 160, 155 or 143 If I ever want to cut weight and compete of course. Well, standing I have confidence in my boxing, and Thai clinching attacks so I can own there (I didnt work on it against my buddy tho). Wrestling he is awsome and he just owned me. I was able to work my take down defense using underhooks and legs between his legs to stop him from tossing me around. On the ground however I was able to do a lot. He was usually able to toss me so easily he could get me in side control or at least 1/2 guard. we probably worked on this about 15 times. I admit his GNP is crazy so he probably could of just pounded me a few of the times, but in some cases hed be too agressive and put his hands inside on me and I put my legs up inverted my knees, pushed his head back wrapped his arm up. Im not gonna explain everything, as Im obv not a master, but a bunch of basic moves were working on my fairly experienced friend.
Resin 06-08-2006, 10:36 PM sounds intense ......... i got a buddy who did wrestling in high school he's pretty strong i will be rolling with him as soon as my back heals.

Calrenkarn 06-10-2006, 02:23 AM I trained in Tang Soo Do for 3 years and although the standup skills you gain are alright... the style boils down to learning how to hit someone in the nuts style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif. For the last 8 months Ive been training in Port Moody, BC with Gibson's Kickboxing and Pankration. Even though I have been there for more than half a year I dont feel that my standup has improved a whole lot but Ive definately gained leaps and bounds in grappling/submission wrestling.

Resin 06-11-2006, 05:31 AM Will boxing help you in MMA ...... YES are you fucking serious?
In boxing you are taught how to properly throw a punch and they teach you how to be balanced on your feet so you will have devistating power.
Boxing alone wont serve you any good because boxing is one dimensional and we all know this but if you want to learn how to use your punching power this is the first place to go
thanks.

Paulo Gazze "Junior" used to be my kids BJJ teacher and he's a cool guy and good teacher. He's trained with Nog, various Gracies, Genki Sudo, Team Punishment, and many more. He beat B.J. Penn at BJJ twice and is fighting in the XFC.
When I get my stuff ($ and time) together I want to train at his place in HB. So I recommend checking it out. Josh Barnett did some training there to prepare for a recent Pride.

The Fire 06-13-2006, 05:50 AM TKD for 3 years in middle and high school. Cross trained some Muay Thai with a guy in our Dojo who was taking that as well for the last year that I was doing TKD. Woked out with the wrestling team from time to time with some buddies on it - they showed me a bunch of stuff and let me train with them in the hopes that I would cut my mullet and join the team (it was the 80s alright?) - I would not relinquish and you could not have long hair and wrestle in the WPIAL for safety reasons.
If only I knew then what I know now.
Nothing for 15 years and now at 33 I have been training BJJ for 2 years. In that time I have met a lot of cool people in my area that train mma and I have two places that I go to train with these guys on a semi regular basis to try and put it all together.
I have this fleeting notion that I will get in the cage some day, but at 33 I have to do it SOON if I am going to do it - and I have a long way to go in my training to be the kind of fighter I think I can/could be. I don't know that I'll be able to get over that training hump to do that - even at the lower levels in Sueubenville OH where they have matches I am not going to go in unless I go in at my best. And THAT is the hard part - getting to your best.

I love wing chun. Great concept, and when combined with boxing and Gracy, makes for a greater combination! I used to do Karate for a few years, but lack of useful technique called it quits. I've been doing boxing and BJJ for a few months now, and loving every second of it. The wing chun is backyard as I don't have a good dojo nearby :p

Ive been checking out some local places, to find some incredible McDojo masters. It cracks me up to see some of these people, who cannot fight whatsoever, yet they believe their masterful skill in Ken Po will help them beat Fedor.

thegroove 07-04-2006, 04:22 AM I am training in boxing, and I am a fan of MMA. I personally like boxing better, but I watch both all the time. I would say do not focus on a particular art form if you desire to compete in MMA. What I would do if I was going to compete, is focus on the "style" of MMA. By that I mean you do not need a black belt or to be world class in any particular art form, just master the things that are most necessary for MMA. There are a few basic things that happen in MMA and the majority of the dojo stuff can be thrown out the window.
MMA is very predictable and you should focus on what happens in 90% of MMA fights. Although I love boxing, a lot of boxing skills are no good in a MMA fight just like MMA skills are no good in a boxing ring. Take the most vital things of each form and form your own style. I would say get in as much wrestling experience as possible just to develope the stamina, strength and grappling experience. Learn to defend against the most common submissions and also learn to do them. Knowing them offensively and defensively will better your understanding of them.
As I said, MMA is very predictable. Certain things will almost always happen. Focus on and master those things. Rampage is a perfect example of what I am talking about. He has mastered a few basic things offensively and defensively. Strive for perfection at a few things, not mediocrity at a lot of things.

riverman 07-05-2006, 07:43 AM I am a catch wrestler, I started wrestling at 12 quit at 14 than began again at 16 to 18 at 21 I started training shootfighting. so after 4 years of grappling, I am becomiing a well rounded grappler. I've been doing Muai Thai for 3 years and have some good training partners but you can never have enough.
Resin 07-05-2006, 11:04 AM +10 for catch wrestling.
hvaniderstine 07-07-2006, 02:31 AM train at the chute boxe academy, you will prosper greatly
Combat_Hapkido 08-19-2006, 05:34 AM I train in a mixture of combat hapkido and chinese kempo 3 times a week and in chito ryu karate once a week. I also work out with weights a couple times a week and incorporate pilates into my routine because it is great for working your core muscles. I've been into martial arts for a little over 3 years now.
I love the combat hapkido/chinese kempo because its not only fun to do but is without a doubt the most practical martial arts style that I have ever seen - we use a lot of joint locks, throws, kicks, take downs, finishing techniques and Jiu Jitsu grappling techniques.
VENDO 08-19-2006, 08:16 AM It's funny how everybody says they train on the internet...
dynamitemitch 08-19-2006, 07:11 PM I know. I can say i train MT and Vale Tudo and did Greco Roman and freestyle wrestling but everyone on the net can just wave you off as some internet wannabe. It sucks. Some people in here that spend over 8 hours a week training and they look like internet losers. Oh well.
