View Full Version : I don't know how to cut weight
knockkraut 04-17-2007, 01:23 AM Hey kids, I never wrestled in high school, or college, so I have no idea how to cut weight before a competition. I compete in submission wrestling tournaments, but I'm always grappling at my natural weight, which I think might be a bit of a disadvantage. Anyways, I was wondering if any of you guys had a comprehensive guide or instructional to cutting weight in a healthy manner. Thanks.
The more experienced guys here will give you good advice but one thing I heard was that the best weight cutters like Sean Sherk do a dry run once or twice before the actual fight weigh-in to make sure they cut properly and their bodies get used to doing it.
Then there are no surprises at the actual weigh-in.
Bruce Lee 04-17-2007, 01:30 AM DEHYDRATION.
Tom Stall 04-17-2007, 01:34 AM lower your calorie intake, take more potassium, buy a bottle of albolene or sweet sweat and a sweatsuit.
knockkraut 04-17-2007, 02:27 AM I know weight cutting is mostly dehydration, but what rate is safe? And what is the best and safest way to re-hydrate?
El Chupanarba 04-17-2007, 04:32 AM i high school i knew guys that cut 15lbs the night before... i knew guys that cut from 135 to 112 over a week.
this is in high school mind you where their bodies are not fully developed. but this was rare. most guys cut a good 5-10 pounds a week to make weigh-ins on friday or thursday then balloon back up
i never cut too much the most i cut was like 4lbs on a friday night/saturday morning. but i gave up size to a lot of guys. the best thing to do is to choose a weight class that is not too far from reach. cut like 15lbs or 20lbs at the most then cut the weight over a good time
here is a good diet plan
http://www.cifstate.org/Wrestling/wrdiet.htm
then the night before cut those last few pounds, stair-master for 20 minutes to warm up, do the sauna in ten minute increments and be sure to have a friend to make sure you don't die, then don't eat anything or drink water until you weight in... also take your vitamins they help a lot
oh there is never a healthy way to cut weight, cutting weight is hard physically and mentally, it is also a bitch because if you cut too much you will have no energy come fight time.

Your av rawks. What the hell is that thing? While I'm at it, what's your screen name mean?
mmarlon brando 04-17-2007, 12:55 PM Here's a good article on a safe method
http://grapplearts.com/How-to-Cut-Weight.html
Be careful if you do decide to use old methods like sitting in the sauna. The more weight you lose, the slower your reflexes will be and the less power you'll have.
Also, here's a link to John Berardi's Grappler's Guide to Nutrition from another thread on here. Berardi is one of the best when it comes to weight cutting and the book is pretty devoted to the subject. He discusses the pro and cons of different techniques. Great read.

The whole point of cutting weight is to do something completely unnatural.
There is no safe way to drain 10 lb's of water from your system, or no safe way to put it back.
In your first post you mentioned how you didn't do wrestling as a youngster so you don't know how to cut weight properly. Let me tell ya, all the guys I went to High School wrestling with have Diabetes or are obese now. Don't do it. Unless you are planning on making a living from fighting, there is no reason to destroy your metabolism.
I'm waiting for a thread asking the safest way to inject streroids into one's eyeball.
dynamitemitch 04-17-2007, 07:00 PM part of rehydrating go through several steps:
drink pedialyte right after the weigh in
drink gatorade + water half hour later
1 hour later fruit + water
1 hour later you can eat

erskine777 04-30-2007, 08:11 AM take diuretics so that you'll lose more water through your urine.
kermitthefrayer 04-30-2007, 03:35 PM Ummm how about cardio?
ninjashoes 05-01-2007, 03:15 PM Sometimes you practice with guys your natural weight and then when you cut down you are suprised by the speed of guys one weight class down that are often just as strong as you.
Respect 05-01-2007, 07:12 PM Unless you are like 3lbs off do not worry about your weight. Cutting weight is probably the most HELLISH thing about fighting. Its not worth it for a small tourney. If you are just a couple pounds off, just watch your weight for a couple weeks before the tourny and dont eat till you weigh in.
