A few days ago James “Lights Out” Toney appeared on Boxing Confidential Radio. For those of you who might not have been able to access the audio, here are some of the highlights from Toney’s appearance.

On UFC…

“UFC is not ready for someone like me. I am too violent.”

“If they want to make it boxer vs. UFC, if Dana White has the balls, like he does on TV, he can call Dan Goossen and we can make it happen. I will fight Randy Couture or Chuck Lindell.”

“99 percent of boxers who would go in UFC would probably get their ass whooped. But I am one percent, I never got my ass whooped.”

On His Physical Condition…

“Since the second Sam Peter fight, I took one week off and have been in the gym ever since then, everyday…I am ready to fight whenever.”

On His Return to the Ring…

“You the reporters keep talking that bullshit. I am a legend, when I return, I am the one everyone wants to see…What makes me different from De La Hoya, I am not Hispanic?”

On De La Hoya…

“If De La Hoya fought in Detroit, you would have three or four thousand people in the seats, because nobody would want to see him!”

“Me I am a real person. If you meet me in public, I will talk to you anywhere, anyhow. With Oscar, you go to get through three or four people just to speak to him and when you do speak to him he is going to be half-ass.”

On Detroit Boxing…

“We started boxing…Joe Louis, Ray Robinson, Tommy Hearns, James Toney, the list goes on. If me and Chris Byrd fought in Forbes Field, we would put alteast 60 to 70,000 people in there.”

Peter must of loosened this dude's brain. He is a great fighter but not the legend that he claims himself to be.

I think Toney is one of the best fighters of our generation hands down. The guy will be a legend when he retires IMO

He's hilarious, and maybe of the meanest guys I've ever seen in boxing. I like what Manny Steward said about him, he said that back in 90s James would come over to the Kronk Gym, back when they had some real good middleweights like Mcclellan and as soon as he got in the door he'd yell "LET THE BEATINGS BEGIN", he'd whoop anyone that would spar with him and leave.

Toney is a legend, and a great damn fighter ... i've always loved watchin him, but he's nuts if he thinks he'd hang with the best in mma

one of my favorite boxing bouts of all time was when toney fought jirov and beat him to take the IBF cw title

toney is fuckin crazy. i think a good a kickboxer could take him down. boxers don't check leg kicks.

but he is definitely one of the best of this generation. fun boxer to watch.

I think if you fight Toney in MMA, you better take it down right away. A good kickboxer might pick him apart with leg kicks, but IMO its not worth the risk. Toney is a masterful counterpuncher and, even though not a particularily hard puncher as a HW boxer, with little MMA gloves he'll take your head off. He's got real quick hands at HW so he could throw his own bomb at the same time (like Zentsov did to Rizzo).
