View Full Version : My first tourny experience
RossBJJ 04-04-2007, 08:24 PM i have been doing bjj for about 1 year, but i just had my first tournament.
I did extremely bad because in the teen division there were only 3 weightclasses and no experience classes, everyone was together in the teens. I happened to be in the 150 and below weight class when i only weigh 102. My first match was against a dude who was busting flying arm-bars and weighed 40 lbs more then me. I was really disappointed because i expected alot more from a submission sport tourny. Are all tournies like this?

it's all good man...all tournies are not like that. what was the name of the tourney?
RossBJJ 04-04-2007, 08:31 PM it was submissionsport spring 07
it was in memphis TN.
usually at the bigger ones there are more competitors so they divide more the categories

hah, yeah i sure hope tahts the case, there were about 9 guys in my division
SmokinGunz 04-04-2007, 08:35 PM very true indeed VMA...i do tournaments at the Desert Quest out here in AZ. they divide them into more divisions but for the teens, you Ross would've been in that same category probably. but it's the same that all of the beginners, intermediates, and pros are all mixed together in my tourney. i like it that way though...i was out grappling purple belts and fools thats been wrestling for years without even knowing it.

yeah, it was my first one and i was verrryyyy nervous, i wasnt thinking at all and was to defensive and not enough offensive. Normally i out-grapple the blue belts at my school but he was all over me and i never had a chance to do anything.

yeah, i feel ya bro. my first tourney, i was feeling like a fucking bitch...but it kept me on my shit being to scared to make a mistake. you'll feel a hell of a lot better your next time...and the key thing is to focus on your technique more than anything.

i almost won my second match though in that tourny, cus i was being to aggressive cus i was feeling better getting my first match over, i was throwing him around with double legs and slammed his face in the mat when he tried to hip throw me, then i double legged him into his guard while he was guillotining me.... stupidest thing i ever couldve done....

sounds like you were doing pretty good, you just slipped and got caught...it happens to everyone...but it sounds like you had a good game plan overall. when i'm in tourney's i do pretty much the same, using wrestling to neutralize jj, and use a lot of submission grappling tech over wrestlers. i be down in Memphis every so often, i got a lot of family down there in W. Memphis. where are there tourneys held?
Cameron 04-04-2007, 08:53 PM hey man no worries every tourny is different ive been doing bjj 1-2 times a week since october and in my first tourney on a week of training and a couple months or wreslting i got 2 subs and lost 1 on points. the next tourny like alot later with more training i lose the first fight with points. then my last one i came third in the no gi but in the gi i went out in the first round. tournys are just for bettering your skills and testing your self its all good use it as motivation for your next one.

this one was at a high school there called white station, not sure what part of town its in im bad with directions and those kind of things.
knockkraut 04-04-2007, 10:54 PM Man, oh man, my first tourny experience was the Joslin Open. There were 30 guys in my division. What sucked was that, even though we were supposed to divided by our grappling experience, people would lie. I was in the less than a year category, and a couple of guys from my club recognized guys in my division that had been there a couple of years.
mullard 04-05-2007, 12:06 AM Just keep training and working hard to improve your game, perhaps I will be able to join you in the next tournament you compete in. - Dalton
