John Wayne Parr is honestly my favourite fighter in any org/ combat sport
I know he has had a few dissappointing losses in his day but some of his wins are very impressive and even most of his losses he still was impressive

so why the fuck isnt he getting another shot in K1 max?
anyone here actually know anything about K1 apart from Dragonfly?
I know I dont

yeah something like that.
It's hard for me to say anything on him, Mainly cause I have never seen him fight, except for a couple on youtube, but he needs to go up in another org to fight better comp.

and supposably his dan severn fight was worked. I don't know, I heard it though grapevine.

I've seen him fight a couple of times. Once against James Lee at a KOTC in Penrith (Western Sydney) and the second time at an Xplosion show against some total can American wrestler they flew in at short notice. (Interestingly, the KOTC card also featured Krazy Horse Bennett, who had a very hard time containing some unknown Aussie scrapper.)

Bonello tooled James Lee in quick time and put his nose all over his face, and did pretty much the same to the Unknown Wrestler in the other show, who tried to stall a lot, but ended up getting whipped for his trouble.

There's a lot of talk about Bonello's record being pretty unremarkable, and the fight against JWP (who was a friend of his, by the way) doesn't do much to change that perception.

He should fight someone like Elvis Sinosic for starters, and then use the money his sponsors are throwing at him (TB vs JWP had a 100K prize!!!!) to fly in some decent fuckin' competition.

on-topic: JWP rules - never ducked a fight in his life, and a very nice guy to boot.

http://zine.infinitemma.com/index.php?page=tony-bonello-interview---may-2007

Well well well, this has to be one of the most anticipated interviews to date and with a fighter who has consistently kept fans and the like always talking, his name does not go unmentioned on the site, I'd say longer then 2 weeks. The mere mention of his name sends a spiraling conversation between those for TB and those against, those with many permutations of every single one of his fights and those with reservations about his wheeling and dealings. I am of course talking about none other then TB as in Tony 'Gun' Bonello.

He has been a very successful business partner and participating champion of King of the Cage. If you ask Tony what he wants, he says he just wants to fight and continue towards his goals in life.
Having now moved to America to pursue his goals and to progress his career further the Gun took some time out to chat with Miss Fighter from Infinitemma about what he's been up to and where the notorious Bonello has been since his last KOTC fight.

M: Thanks for your time Tony, How have you been?

T: Good thank you. This is my first online interview. I'd prefer to talk to people face to face rather than over an email. Ill do my best to answer any questions you wish to know.

M: I'm happy to have you fly me over haha

T: Haha maybe

M: So Tony many people know you from King of the Cage fighting series shows tell us a bit of history around this partnership with Pedro.

T: Well, Pedro and I spent the last 2 years promoting KOTC in Sydney and the Gold Coast in QLD. We started the venture together and our goal was to promote legal cage fighting shows in Sydney. On a consistent basis. Why did we do that? Because everyone told me it couldn’t be done. In 1997, Randy promoted a cage fighting show in Sydney he called "The Ultimate Fighting Championships". It was the 1st cage fighting show in Sydney, but he had no approval at all to do the show from any government departments, and was in no way associated with the real UFC in the states. He was in it to make a quick buck then split. After that single show he disappeared. He never did another show. That was ten years ago. No one since Randy has promoted cage fighting in Sydney.

M: So where did things go for you from there?

T: I enjoy watching the sport. So, I had several meetings with Sandra Nori's (Minister for Sport) legal team. Also, sport and recreational teams and the licensing Police Commander. All separately of course, to determine what obstacles I needed to overcome to promote my shows legally in Sydney, without then the police or any government agency trying to shut me down.

M: Was there anyone that helped you along the way?

T: J.N.I (Muay Thai promoter) also gave me a lot of kind advice to assist me through his personal experiences. But, no one in NSW before me or since me, has had one on one meetings with the top police commanders or the minister of sports personal team of legal council to get the nod to promote without violating any current law in NSW. So in the end, Pedro and I promoted 5 shows a year at Penrith Panthers and one at the Gold Coast.

M: So no issues with the cops I assume??

T: We never had a single police officer nor any government people try to shut us down because we had gone through the correct channels before we started our first show. In the end, I achieved what I wanted to achieve. I promoted consistent cage fighting shows in Sydney legally (5 a year).

M: So what changed for you?

T: In October last year, I just wasn’t interested in promoting in Australia anymore. I have business interests overseas in Dubai that I wanted to go and focus on. So I gave total ownership to John Pedro in October of last year, 2006. I told him I wanted one more fight in OZ before I left. So, we booked Parr to fight me in Feb.

M: Yeah because I guess the last time most of us saw you was at the much touted challenge of KOTC and maybe fight history between the undisputed Muay Thai champion Mr. John Wayne Parr and yourself for a cash prize of $100K, this being one the largest prize offerings in MMA fight history.

T: Yeah it was definitely a great experience for both of us and JWP was a true sportsman stepping up to the plate.

M: After that the rumors were flying around about the fight and about where you were and where you were now, so tell us where did you go?

T: After that fight I flew to the USA. Since October 2006, KOTC is totally owned by Pedro and whatever he does with the show is up to him.

M: How did you find working with Pedro all the time?

T: Pedro is extremely loyal and a great human being. I’m sure no matter what he does with the show; he will do so with a good heart. So for now I'm in the States for a couple of months training before I head home to Dubai.

M: Ok cool well that dispels any ill feelings with Pedro as many people think.

M: So we know you're in the States now - is it true you trained with Rampage and the likes?

T: Yes, I've trained with Rampage and his guys at Team Punishment in Huntington Beach.

M: So what's he like?

T: He is a very cool guy, extremely strong and very funny. I’ve been training with many different fighters. but, my daily training partners are wrestling and BJJ with Babalu and Joker. For boxing its Justin Fortune and Bowie Tupou, there are many other guys train at the gym. but, these guys are my bread and butter training partners.

M: Are you enjoying it?

T: It has been one of the best decisions I've made and really happy I can be here doing what I love.

M: How long have you been there now?

T: I've been in the US for about 3 months now.

M: Cool and what's a typical training day there for you?

T: We train extremely hard daily, it’s full on

M: How does that compare with the training days back in Australia?

T: The difference between the USA and OZ is that here you can spar as much as you want everyday and with very high level wrestlers, boxers and BJJ guys. In OZ very few guys train full time and fewer guys will spar with you everyday, so it doesn't matter how hard you train in Australia, the sparring partners just aren't there. Plus not to mention so much more knowledge of everything MMA in the States. I'm learning every single day.

M: So obviously you wouldn't go to the States without some sort of deal or sponsorship, can you tell us what's next for Bonello

T: Yes - I have signed with a management company called 'SuperAgent'. It's a 5 yr contract.

M: Hey that's great news can you tell us more about them

T: Yeah they manage Vanderlai Silva, Shogun, Josh Barnett, Babalu etc

M: So tell us what IS next for The Gun?

T: I'm to be fighting in Japan shortly as to who? I have no idea yet, I will know in June.

M: Excellent please keep us informed!

M: Any other deals that have come your way?

T: Yes I have also signed a 2 yr contract with Rockstar Energy Drink. They signed Shogun and I on the same day about a month ago now. Hurley has also signed me up and will sponsor me as well.

M: Sounds like it's all working out for you which is great, so what's one of the things you are most looking forward to with all these changes in your fighting career?

T: I'm looking forward to fighting on an A level show for the first time in my career. Up until now I have fought C level and B level shows only. So I'm concentrating on learning how to fight correctly under lets say those sorts of lighting conditions etc. I'm just excited to get into an A level show in Japan and to finally test myself at a high level and to find out what I've got, against some of the best guys out there. To me personally from the moment I fight my first fight on an A level show I will consider this as the beginning of my career. I still have many years left in me and to me I really have just started. I'd say about 7-8 years left in this sport. I will fight many great A level fighters before I retire, I will win some and lose some but in the end I will always give 100%

M: That's great Tony, thanks for your time and I wish you the best of luck with your career and as you know there are many people who support you and we'll be looking out for your name in the coming year in Japan etc.

T: Thanks very much and thanks to my fans - the people that have supported me and of course my sponsors.
