Or better yet, invest in a Judo Gi, which makes collar chokes almost impossible to get on you. Where's your tourny?

What about the judo gi makes it prevent collar chokes?

Hi Cameron,

I'm no expert or anything, but doing some research on sports psychology has helped my performance in competition immensely. Check out "Wrestling tough" and "Flow in sports" if you get the chance. There are also a number of online resources for info.

If you don't get the chance to check those books out, don't forget to breathe, relax and do not let the possibility of not winning enter your mind. Have someone pep talk you, it helps.

1.Breathe
2. Relax
3. Have complete belief in yourself

you have to worry about a ton of things . gi is slower then no gi aswell, but you will have to contend with new guard passes , chokes all sorts of shit

The thickness of the weave makes it really hard to get a solid grip on it.

if you're being defensive... you are losing the fight... always be on the offense.

if your opponent grabs your sleeve ends; put your knee on top and push down to break his grip

there is gonna be a million new sweeps and guard passes with the gi now ... if you want a look into how creative these sweeps can get go into the training instructionals section and download the videos made by fabio gurgel. I dont know how much experience you have training gi jj but if you dont have that much downloading those and watching them will definitely open your mind and help you to get a better natural feel of how the gi can be manipulated. and if you have the time study all the different moves he puts out there with some other guys and you will probably be able to pull something off on your opponent that hes never seen before.

a thicker collar will only stop someone who has weak grip.

What belt level are you competing at?

.....and I suppose you bend frying pans and rip phone books? When I say my club's judo collars are hard to grab, they're hard to grab.

i can almost close a #2 coc gripper. im not saying my grip is the best, but no collar is gonna stop me from sinking in a choke.

i just want to say thanks for all the tips every one its very much accperciated. unfortunatly i didnt do that great in the gi i lost on points in an exciting but positionaly dominated fight. the guy had a better top game than me but really didnt come close to a sub. and i came 3rd in the nogi with 4 subs and getting subed..... all the matches will be posted in a different thread eventually thank you.
