Besides the shrugs, what other weight lifting excercise is good for the neck?

What excercise will help you with punching power?

i would say dumbell shoulder raises, to work your neck. punching heavy bags, medicine ball drills, and working technique for power.

not really sure how you work the neck with weights, unless you use a machine. upright rows are good for working the traps, and i'd go with bridges to build neck strength.

you can do the "sit-ups" instead of actually doing a situp, you just move your head up and keep doing that.

also you can purchase a neck developer at a Big 5 or some sporting goods store. its basically a piece of fabric that goes around your head with a chain on it to hold weight.

p.s. to do the exercise with the neck developer you put it on, then lean foward with hands on knees. you look down at teh ground and then slowly point your face upwards as if looking at teh ceiling.

use a towel and put it on of those pulley machines in the gym and then bite and pull

one neck drill i learned from one of pavel's videos was to go on your knee's, rest your forehead on a bench then keep your back straight, straighten your legs out so your body is in a straight line then roll to the end of the bench and back keeping your body in a line, be careful it's hard as hell if you do it right and can hurt your neck easy, for punching power maybe increase the weight of your heavybag

I attach a jump stretch band to the top of my power rack, use a towel to protect my head/face and do neck extensions in all directions.

ive found that pushing the palm of my hand against my head has built strength in my neck area

^^or you can look at stuff for a long time without moving your head and your neck gets tense and stronger

anyways, for punching power do the hitting a practor tire with a sledgehammer exercise...you look ridiculous but it works

i would think strapping on some small weights on your arms and hitting a punching could help, heck why not strap wieights all over

How about strapping weights all over, and then putting a giant magnet behind you?

Hitting the heavy bag coupled with weight training would work.

Focus on your back, core and legs. Russian twists and medicine-ball throws are good core exercies to replicate the twisting needed for punching, and squats and calf raises are great for training your legs to push off the ground for added power. Throw in a good pull-up regimen and finish with some light shadow boxing with light dumbbells. For example, for a quick workout I might do:

Pull-ups - 3 sets of 10 reps
Upright rows - 3 sets of 10 reps

Squats - 3 sets of 10
Standing calf raise - 3 of 10

Russian twists or woodchop - 4 of 10

Finish with 10 minutes of shadow boxing with light dumbbells.
* Extra credit - Throw in as many push-ups on your knuckles as you can as a finisher.

Do the lifting portion explosively, but lower the weight in a steady, controlled manner. Alternate this or a similar weight workout with heavy-bag training during the week, and your power should start to develop in no time.

For the neck, you should work your traps, which shrugs and upright rows will do. In Muay Thai, we lay a small puching mitt on the ground kneel in front and put out foreheads on the pad. We then brace ourselves with our hands and straighten our legs so we're standing and our weight is on our head on the pad. Then, we rock back and forth on our head in a controlled manner for 20 reps. We do 3 sets of this.

You could also do a partner drill. Get in a clinch with your partner grabbing around the back of your head. Use your neck to pull back against his grip. Hold for a count of 10 and relax. Repeat this 10 times.

Just a few ideas. Hope it works.

ya the full contact twist is amazing for improving punching power and is one of the best exercises for transferring hip power to the shoulder (most KO punch power comes from the hips). Its in Pavels book Bullet Proof Abs
