the only real open source software I use is firefox. I am going to load Linux on an old notebook my dad has and learn it from there. MS=SHIT.

Yeah, there really is no real need to buy any of the distros, unless you want all of the doco and tarballs on CD. Most are free, especially the desktop versions (ubuntu, debian). You can download the tarballs for free a lot of different places.
