I WEIGHT 165LBS. I USUALLY DO 20 REPS OF 175 3X'S. I DONT REALLY MAX OUT ANYMORE. WHEN I DO, I MAX AT 295. WHEN I WAS IN THE ARMY, I USED TO POWERLIFT WHEN I WAS WEIGHING 190. I USED TO MAX OUT AT 360 LBS :)

I remember when i was in eighth grade i did 225 and weighed 150lbs. I quit lifting after that for a while and then started again when i was a senior and Eventually i got up in the 300's but quit after that. P.S. i weighed around 220 when i benched in the 300's just so you don't think i was a 150lb kid benching 300.

NOT EXACTLY TRUE...IT'S VERY GOOD TO USE FOR EXPLOSIVE PUSHING...ESPECIALLY IF YOUR EVER MOUNTED. THAT'S THE MAIN REASON I DON'T MAX OUT TOO MUCH. I DO HEAVY WEIGHT BUT A LOT OF REPS TO INCREASE ENDURANCE AND STRENGTH:)

before i broke my leg in a hockey game i was benching 250lbs weighing in at 155lbs (im 5'6'' btw - compact but powerful soo if u ever wondered y i love sherk...here ya go!)
im back up to 230lbs benching (im still in my fucking cast tho) and thru biking which is a bitch givin my situation i've dropped back down to 155lbs in weight from 160 which i got to by sitting on my ass for a month sleeping off the pain killers...
benching allows u to maintain control of ur opponent when ur in the mount/guard....

If you train intense(and your body is not weak to begin with) it is possible to bench your own weight in about 6 months, maybe even earlier. You only need to train for about an hour a day , it's perfectly possible to post and train, there is no need to laugh at people...

its not hard to bench your own weight at all. just a good routine is all you need with proper rest. when i first started lifting i was weak as shit. but in no time i could lift my weight. i havent touched a weight in about 4 months and i gurantee i could put my weight up at least 8-10 times.

Um benching your own weight is uhhh... easy? To be considered in relatively good shape for muscular strength its bench your body weight 12 times. That generally puts your max somewhere around 60 lbs over body weight. There are plenty of preteens that can bench your own body weight. Harsh is a straight pussy. I almost never hit free weights anymore and I can still put up 220-225 and weigh 165-170.

He didn't even say he did 100 continously... Just that he did 100 pushups... that could be 2 sets of 50 4 sets of 25... 100 continously isn't that hard either. I've done over 100 in 2 minutes for a pt test before. Sounds like more than a few people on here probably could accomplish this. its not that hard.

Weight 90Kg, one rep max 120KG
I don't feel that the Barbell or machine press is much use for fighting. These days I do single arm dumbbell press on a stability ball - much harder & works the legs & core as well. Currently 5 reps at 35KG each arm, thick handled dumbbell. Guys like Jeff Monson & Ross Enamait recommend this stuff....

Naw not necessarily Sean... When i was a junior in high school and worked my legs all the time I weighed like 150 and deadlifted like 335. Remember DL you only gotta get it up to your waist not clean it or get it to your shoulders or anything. I can probably do about that now without training and I weigh 170. After Selection a couple years ago I probably could have done 400 and I weighed like 145. (for like 3 days then I ballooned back to 160.) If I couldn't have done 400 I could have easily done nearly 300 for Reps.

He still wouldn't be that doughy 160 lbs and lift what hes claiming... And I've taken Creatine I put on 10 lbs was ripped as fuck and lifted that at like 165 then when I cycled off was still decently in shape (read the 2nd most ripped person out of my associates) at 155 and my other buddy that was in better shape than me was in hardcore trainup for Airforce ParaRescue.
He might lift it... but he's bigger than 160 if hes built like that... Or its the flash that made it look funny or whatever but theres no definition anywhere but his abs. And I could get that by drinking really heavy 1 night and just taking a dehydrated pic.

If you've been lifting for two months with 4 sets of 12 I think it's time you progress your training to something like 5 sets of 5 6 sets of 3 or 3 sets of 3 Assuming of course your goals is to get stronger.
Does the heavy weight/low reps thing applies to all exercises, or some are better doing high reps, and some low.

Does the heavy weight/low reps thing applies to all exercises, or some are better doing high reps, and some low.
Well you wanna mix it up alittle with all exercises. It's just heavy weight and low reps will build a solid strength foundation. Then you can go for more reps if you want, but to get stronger you'll always have to use heavyweight and low reps, high reps will improve your endurance though. Endurance is rather pointless if you have no strength to begin with hence why you need a good strength foundation either to gain more strength or to make endurance more useful.
Here's a good program to get you started.
http://www.geocities.com/elitemadcow1/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm
And about compound and isolation exercises. Should I do compound exercises ONLY, or can I mix them a little bit.
blevunly
07-21-2007, 05:32 AM
Well if your looking to gain some size you can mix them. Make sure to do the compound first as they will activate the CNS better and stimulate more growth. As long as your using compound movements with heavy weight feel free to add in some isolation to work certain areas a little bit more just make sure not to over do it. For instance dumbell curls followed by barbell curl isn't really necessary as you've already hit the biceps.

Im 6' 1" and 200lbs. an I bench 415lbs. and can do 50 pull-ups. I find that for my boxing that the more strength training i do allows me too have more control and punch harder. I like speed lifting(high reps, low weight) though, it makes me more explosive.
About the high reps low weight, you got half the eqyation right in that you should use low weight. But you should also use low reps so that your training of speed strength or strength speed doesn't turn into an endurance session as this will hinder your progress.

the only way you're gonna punch harder is by perfecting your technique and strengthening your core and legs. benching won't do much.
I would say the legs are on par with the arms in creation of punching power. The core is definately the dominant producer though. Benching can be used to build more explosive strength and maximal strength both usefull, but I agree if your point was that benching seems to be overemphasized by alot of people in relation to punching power.

i agree that the core is the most important, but it'll be hard to convince me otherwise about the role of the legs. i refuse to believe that a parapalegic with a core 10x stronger than mine, could punch harder than me.
heh, an exaggerated example i know, but i think they are at least more important than the arms/chest.

if that's the case, then why put your pull up numbers?
