Rogan didn't hurt his career. He's got plenty of things to do while he isn't doing standup, and his comedy career won't die as a result of this- many comedians have lauded Joe for this, and now his career is forever linked with Ned Holness (Mencia).

As for the fence joke, it's not so much that Rogan provided proof in and of itself, but Ned's reaction that made him look guilty. Asking Joe "why do you care?!" and saying "you're retarded!" makes it look like he's saying "yea, and!?" instead of "why would I steal a joke everyone has come up with?"
