View Full Version : Do you practice takedowns in bjj?
xhale 01-29-2007, 09:32 PM any members of a bjj gym here practice takedowns??
iv been going to bjj for like 6 months... and i have not drilled a single takedown.
and when we spar, im the only one that actually shoots in... the rest of the people just try to grab you... its pretty pathetic
Aussie 01-30-2007, 06:38 AM when i grapple while training mma, we never start on our feet it pisses me off,it always starts in the one knee position, but i havent trained at that plaace much so it might be diferent
At my BJJ gym we train takedowns and use them in sparring but we don't slam our opponent i.e. I won't pick up my opponent using the double leg and slam him as hard as I can but rather guide him down into the position I want; thats not to say that its a fairy sort of thing but rather are safety issue because we dont need any more injuries on top of the ones we sustain already.
Its the noobs that are told to start on the knees because they don't know what they're doing and need to learn the ground game first.
nzjujitsu 01-30-2007, 06:51 AM we do practice takedowns but it isint consistent , when we roll we start out on one knee just because there is not enough room for heaps of people trying to take down.

understandable
which is why we do lots of round robin, which is good i guess cuz we start from the feet.. and i can practice the takedowns
i just would like to drill it a few times.... even once a week!
nzjujitsu 01-30-2007, 11:51 AM im guessing that round robing is like sharkbait and we do that aswell.

Same thing here, Rob - avoiding injuries is the main key. I the weeks leading up to tournaments, we tend to work them more often and more intensely.

the only thing you work intensely is the lube on your hand

Aiden 02-02-2007, 01:22 PM At my school we have multiple instructors who each teach a different aspect of the game. Boxing, Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Theres a class that concentrates only on takedowns but this school is designed to make MMA fighters or at least MMA rounded students.
mwvw13 02-04-2007, 04:49 AM Hell yes I practice them. we have some sick wrestlers in our gym. It's shoot or be shot, lol.
graciegirl 02-04-2007, 08:27 AM Our instructor has us practice takedowns during warm ups, and has someone teach takedowns 1 day a week.
VTXRaider 02-04-2007, 04:09 PM We practice them quite a bit actually. One of our instructors also has a judo background and he concentrates on a lot of the takedowns and throws.
ninjashoes 02-06-2007, 03:36 AM the double legs in my BJJ book by Renzo and Royler are comical, you basically bend over with your ass in the air
