View Full Version : Stepping when throwing the jab???
omegatron 01-27-2007, 07:16 AM I've been told that you should step with the jab. Meaning slide your front foot while throwing your lead hand and quickly bringing it back. Yet, I watched a title boxing DVD which said to leave your front foot a little foward and throw the jab with no step. Which way is better and is it different for disciplines????(ex: Muay Thai compared w/ Boxing, Karate to TKD, etc.)
Chickenjorge 01-27-2007, 07:44 AM in boxing i was taught not to step. the power should come from your shoulder, wing (the muscle under your arm, on the side of your body), and back leg. plus, this punch isnt meant to hurt anyone, it's meant to set other punches up and distract your opponent by blocking their vision (even more so in boxing because of the big gloves)
oh, and as you throw the jab, your shoulder should be, kinda sticking up & out, and your chin tucked under the shoulder with your other hand covering your face. that way, even when you're throwing a punch your chin is covered.
as soon as you throw the jab you should place it right back in your face, and as soon as it's back in position you throw your other hand, with the same thing going on with the shoulder.
but your legs are equally important when throwing these punches as your arms are, becaue most of the power comes from your legs.
also, try hitting with your 2 biggest knuckles.
i know you only asked about throwing the jab with a step or not, but i thought i'd just give you these other tips.
ninjashoes 01-27-2007, 10:07 AM I think you can step in to bridge the distance, I dont think its gonna generate much more power unless your going for somekind of wing chun floating power punch.
VENDO 01-27-2007, 12:06 PM You have to step to jab...
I thought everyone knew that.
Take it from me, My father used to box in cuba.

Aiden 01-27-2007, 02:29 PM I step with my jab...If you want to see it done nicely watch GSP jab. He steps with it. I personally think it gives the jab a little extra, Especially if you square up more than turn sideways in your stance.. Plus If you step with it the opponent wont know if you going for a punch or go for a takedown and if you decide to jab take the small step if you want the takedown take the big step.
Jason 01-27-2007, 04:06 PM i naturally step like 80% of the time, man its funny when me and my buddy goto the gym and do gogoplata/omoplata/triangle reps, they all think we're gay or something, plus im like the only guy in my gym who stretches, all these muscleheads are like WTF
ninjashoes 01-28-2007, 01:53 AM yeah I think the idea of a jab pretty much involves a step, your usually just out of hitting distance when you throw a jab and the jab bridges the distance and distracts the opponent all in one
Wicked Intent 01-28-2007, 05:08 AM Thats the way I've always heard to do it. Step to increase your range not necessarily power.

jack dempsey teaches a "KO jab" technique in his book.. pretty interesting.. very explosive and untelegraphed... i like it! =]
with a step u let the other person know u're coming in.. and therefore he can counter.. plus stepping slow u down a little.. u "could" step with it but your feet need to be set in order to throw a good jab..

The Fire 01-28-2007, 09:08 AM As more of a grappler I am looking to close the distance when I strike so I will often step into my jabs - especially if I double or triple it up.
sean damon 01-28-2007, 06:47 PM i was taught to step but i felt awkward and more able to throw it better with both feet stable. im also lefty so i dont know if that makes it switch at all.
