View Full Version : escapes from side controle
Cameron 01-24-2007, 08:01 PM hey guy whats im kinda new to the site so i want to see how much you guys can help. i am 5'9 and 134 pounds and ive been wrestling for about a year and have been doing bjj for 3 months and im the smallest guy in my class all the other guys there are around 180 and up and i have recently had alot of trouble getting out from side controle. the bigger stronger guys are able to just hold me there i usually dont get in much trouble but just being pinned and defending key locks dosnt realy progress me any. so i wanted to know what are some ways that i can get out of side control with the bigger stronger opponents?

UrbanX 01-24-2007, 10:18 PM Eye poke. Nut grab. Or Vulcan Death Grip.
I'll have to agree with Bruce Lee on this one, Tobikan Judan, but I'll add the Eagle Claw (a nice firm grip and squeeze to the inner thigh). Gets 'em every time.
knockkraut 01-24-2007, 10:28 PM Well, Vulcan death grip aside, my sensei taught us a reversal he called a Dump Truck. Wrap your opponents head with one arm, like you're huggin him, then wrap your other arm under his shin. Try to push his heel into the under side of his thigh. Use your legs to explode, rolling him to his back, either over his head, or over his butt. This will work on larger opponents, I learned it against a guy who had 70-80 lbs. on me. It would be much easier to explain with a video. Hope this helps.

hey Cameron
im cameron too, from canada too
welcome to the shoes bro
UrbanX 01-25-2007, 04:28 AM Nice, xhale. That's not a bad one. I like to follow up with a single leg...good hold on the thigh (in this case, the opponent's left leg), suck it up to your chest, get your legs moved around, get on your knees and drive forward.
xhale 01-25-2007, 09:56 AM yah its actually pretty easy... cuz its somewhat easy to get your arms in like that most people wont even fight you for it... iv used it many times..
hiloboy91 01-28-2007, 05:34 AM vin diesel's nipple cripple is the best way
xhale 01-28-2007, 06:02 AM if you watch heath herring vs vitor... you will see vitor does the same thing
skunknuts[ADR] 01-28-2007, 09:08 AM i wouldnt thought a swift judo-throw transition from Xhale would have done the trick
just kiddin bud...
but anyway welcome, and good post xhale, ill have to try that escape at my next class
Resin 01-28-2007, 11:26 AM I prefer to hit a armbar when my opponent has me in side control.
xhale 01-28-2007, 12:34 PM armbar from side control is hard unless you're fighting a newbie

I'm being brutally honest i've only been able to hit the armbar only two times everytime i go for it they just move out or mount me.

there thats what resins talking about...
iv been able to do it on people that are like 120-130 lbs... no one bigger than me really.
Resin 02-01-2007, 01:57 AM like i said it's totally hard to hit and i've only done it twice.
sean damon 02-01-2007, 02:29 AM the good old elbow escape seems to work alot for me.
Cameron 02-01-2007, 05:54 AM im not saying arm bar from side control isnt possible just you have to be crazy good or agaisnt a crazy noob. at least in my experience. or possibly a light roll. but still i shouldnt bash i just lost a fight from pulling guard and not having enough or a guard http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKaOxagw7GU check it out so i cant really talk im kind a noob
Resin 02-01-2007, 07:09 AM no need to hate on me just because i can execute the move....

are you the one in black??
pbturbo 02-03-2007, 05:15 AM I think you need to escape your hips ...snake/Shrimp move. When they follow you can place them in half guard of full guard or escape(shrimping) to your knees. You have to change their base. Bigger guys are tough...weight is the issue.
pbturbo 02-03-2007, 05:16 AM Does the rolling move (1st video) work on heavier guys? The problem I see is leverage...mainly not having it with the bigger guys
pbturbo 02-03-2007, 05:20 AM A lot of escapes and defense can be accomplished by moving the hips and posting on their hips, using mis-directions. One move doesn't typically work. Be careful or at least aware of posting on their neck. This is typically what they are looking for in side control...limps to arm bar!!
Shrimp. Also check Fedor vs. Aleks Sambo match. Fedor does a slick escape from sidecontrol in it.
Cameron 02-05-2007, 10:13 PM ;328136']are you the one in black??
nah im in blue
Resin 02-05-2007, 10:57 PM nah im in blue
You looked good out there my friend i liked how you pulled guard then went right into rubberguard... nice man.
Cameron 02-05-2007, 11:39 PM ya but i lost due to points cause of my gaurd pull im starting to think that i shouldnt be competing yet ive only had 27 bjj classes and already did two no gi tourneys and lost twice on points. i did get two subs but it seames if i dont sub with in the min mark i lose
Resin 02-06-2007, 01:31 AM ya but i lost due to points cause of my gaurd pull im starting to think that i shouldnt be competing yet ive only had 27 bjj classes and already did two no gi tourneys and lost twice on points. i did get two subs but it seames if i dont sub with in the min mark i lose
All that guy really did was just stay in yer guard.
Keep competing i haven't even entered any kind of tournament before so you have more experience then me in that ....... as far as classes go just keep going and no don't think just because you lost due to points you should stop doing the tournaments ....... don't let that bother you.
Cameron 02-06-2007, 03:52 AM thanks dude that makes me feel better
ninjashoes 02-06-2007, 04:44 AM if your in side control and can't escape, hook a leg and get half gaurd, if you have his leg hooked you can either grab his head and arm and turn to the side or move to full gaurd
side control is a great spot for the guy on top to sense the way your moving your body then adjust his body to maintain control, most wrestling pins are from that position
I recommend getting ahold of a leg and work towards gaurd where you have 10 times more options for sweeps and subs
Resin 02-06-2007, 05:15 AM Yeah ninja was pretty accurate with what he just advised..........
Dont sweat it Cameron stick to it you have potential.
hankd 02-06-2007, 11:30 PM Good info! Thanks guys...

dynamitemitch 02-10-2007, 08:09 PM Shrimping seems to help for me then pushing the one hip away far enough to get half guard. In MMA training i find Resin's armbar from side control effective because a person is concerned with hitting you and creating space to hit you. Just my opinion though.
leedor 02-17-2007, 12:00 AM good stuff

exactly thank you very fucking much........ Now.... the thing is... it's very difficult to pull off i've done it less then a handful of times.
mullard 03-01-2007, 02:54 AM Shrimp like crazy!
Resin 03-21-2007, 02:08 AM try to get the knee in from being in side control to obtain guard again.
The Fire 03-25-2007, 08:01 AM the good old elbow escape seems to work alot for me.
This is it. Also simply put as "shrimping out" as others have stated. This is your easiest, most basic way to re-gain the guard when side mounted. It should almost always be your first escape and is best used before your opponent sets their position. As you can see it also works well when already trapped by first bridging up, then shrimping out, and then diving back in with your knee to regain the guard.
